Before you go

Hua Hin with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan outdoor sights for before 11 am and after 4 pm. Hua Hin is hot and humid from March to October, and the rainy-season showers can be sudden.
  • Wear slip-on shoes and carry a light scarf. Temples need covered shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at prayer halls.
  • Pavements are uneven and some have stalls and parked motorbikes. Use a hired car for short hops at midday and at night.
  • Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin and San Paulo Hospital are private hospitals in town, according to Wikivoyage; check current details. Travel insurance that covers hospital care is essential, and bring your regular medicines with prescriptions.
  • Khao Takiab and Wat Huay Mongkol have steps and wild monkeys at Khao Takiab. Do not carry loose food, and keep bags closed.
  • For Khao Sam Roi Yot, the climb to Phraya Nakhon Cave is strenuous. Ask your driver or the park office about the boat option and decide on the day.

Easiest first

Places in Hua Hin sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (15)

  • ATCHA Indian Restaurant (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — It is outside the central beach area, so arrange a taxi. The directory gives no details on steps or seating, so ask when you phone and request a ground-level table.
  • Baan Dum (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — It is a beachside restaurant on a short side lane, so access is level from the street as far as listings show. We could not verify steps, seating type or toilets, so ask when booking.
  • Baan Itsara (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Indoor and outdoor seating are both listed, so older guests can choose the shaded or breezy side. Old wooden buildings can have steps and uneven boards, so ask for a ground-level table when booking.
  • Baan Khun Por Food Centre (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Informal stalls and shared tables, so seating can be hard to find at busy times. Go early, and choose a table before ordering. The railway crossing and soi mean a taxi is easier than walking.
  • Hua Hin Beach (Places to visit · 1 hour for a walk) — The beach is flat, but sand is tiring for older walkers and shade is limited. Use the paths near hotels, and carry water.
  • Hua Hin Night Market (Shopping · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The market is flat but narrow, crowded and uneven underfoot. Motorbikes pass nearby, so keep close to your group.
  • Hua Hin Railway Station (Places to visit · About 45 minutes) — Mostly level, with covered platforms and some shade. The station was rebuilt as an elevated station in 2023, so check for lifts and ramps and expect steps to the platform if lifts are out of service.
  • Hua Hin Vegan Cafe (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — Inside a shopping mall, so it is shaded and easy to reach by taxi, with a flat approach. The guides do not describe the seating, so ask when you phone.
  • Klai Kangwon Palace (Places to visit · 30 minutes if open; 15 minutes to see the setting) — The grounds are level, but visitors are likely to walk in heat on sun-exposed paths, and access can change. Ask your hotel to confirm opening and dress rules.
  • Kwality Indian Restaurant (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — A sit-down restaurant, so no walking beyond the door; the guide says it is a little hard to find, so give the taxi driver the soi number and ask them to drop you at the entrance. Ask for mild spicing, since the kitchen can customise curries.
  • Pad Thai Phetburi (Food and restaurants · 30 to 45 minutes) — A small, simple eatery, so expect basic seating. It is a short taxi ride from the centre; ask for the plate with less chilli and sugar if you prefer.
  • Royal Indian Food (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — Close to the beachfront hotels, so the walk from many resorts is short and flat. Check whether the table has steps or a pavement edge at the entrance, and ask for a seat away from the road if traffic noise bothers you.
  • Say Cheese (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A small guesthouse bar usually means a quiet room, but sport on TV can be loud. We could not verify steps or seating, so ask before bringing someone with limited mobility.
  • Shiva Indian Restaurant (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — It is on the outskirts, so plan a taxi both ways and ask the driver to wait or have the restaurant call a ride for the return. Ask for mild food, because the guide warns that the cooking is spicy.
  • The Social Salad (Food and restaurants · About 1 hour) — A sit-down cafe with light food that is easy on the stomach. Seating details are not given, so ask when you phone. Salads need no chewing of heavy dishes, though you can request softer vegetables.

Some walking — plan a break (6)

  • Cicada Market (Shopping · 2 hours) — The site is large, with long walks between sections and uneven surfaces. Seating is available at food areas and theatres, but queues can build up.
  • Kaeng Krachan National Park (Places to visit · Full day) — The drive is long and facilities are basic. Walking is on forest tracks, and seats are limited.
  • Khao Takiab (Monkey Mountain) (Places of worship · 1.5 hours) — There are steps and slopes at the hilltop temples, and macaques can be pushy. Use a car to the base and take your time on the climb.
  • Mrigadayavan Palace (Cha-am) (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The palace has raised walkways and steps, and open stretches in sun. Ask about wheelchair access and carry water.
  • Rajabhakti Park (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The park is large with long open stretches and little shade. A car or golf-style transport may help, and benches are limited.
  • Wat Huay Mongkol (Places of worship · 1.5 hours) — The grounds are wide with some steps and little shade at midday. A car drop-off near the main statue helps, and benches are limited.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park (Places to visit · Full day) — The cave involves a climb of several hundred metres, and the trails are exposed to heat. The park office or guides can advise on easier options.

Practical tips for Hua Hin

  • Heat and rain. Hua Hin is hot all year, with mean daily highs around 30 to 34 C. Rain peaks in September and October. Carry an umbrella and plan outdoor sights for the morning.
  • Temple dress. Cover shoulders and knees at Wat Huay Mongkol and the Khao Takiab temples. Shoes come off at prayer halls, and you should not point your feet at Buddha images.
  • Getting around. Use a hired car for day trips. In town, taxis, Grab and songthaews run along Phetkasem Road. Agree tuk-tuk fares before you board.
  • Money. Thailand uses the baht. Cards work in malls and hotels but markets mostly want cash. Check current exchange rates and avoid carrying large sums.
  • Monkeys. Macaques at Khao Takiab can grab food and bags. Do not feed them and keep valuables zipped.
  • Health. Hospitals in town include Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin and San Paulo Hospital, according to Wikivoyage. Travel insurance matters, and bring prescriptions for regular medicines.
  • Weekend markets. Cicada Market runs only on Friday to Sunday evenings, according to its own site. Confirm days before you plan around it.
  • Royal sites. Klai Kangwon Palace is a royal residence. Rules for visiting change; confirm access before travel, and dress modestly at any royal site.
