The short answer
Buxa Tiger Reserve: what visitors should know first
Make it an overnight stay if you want Buxa properly; a rushed day trip from Madarihat is long. Go for forest, birds, rivers and walks, not tigers, which are rarely seen. It suits fitter travellers better than those who want an easy half-day.
History and context
The story behind Buxa Tiger Reserve
Buxa was created as a tiger reserve in 1983, and the Buxa Wildlife Sanctuary was constituted in 1986 over about 314.5 sq km, with a further 54.5 sq km added in 1991. The West Bengal government declared a national park over about 117 sq km in 1997. The reserve now covers about 760 sq km.

Why it matters
Why Buxa Tiger Reserve is worth your time
Buxa matters because it is one of the larger intact forest landscapes in the Eastern Himalayan foothills. It was created as India's 15th tiger reserve in 1983, and it acts as an international corridor for Asian elephant between India and Bhutan, with at least 284 bird species recorded.
For a Jaldapara visitor, it is the natural extension. Where Jaldapara is open grassland and rhino, Buxa is hills, forest and river, with a very different feel. Together they show the range of the Dooars.

How to experience it
Buxa is a large reserve stretching along the Bhutan border and up the Sinchula range, with elevations from about 60 m on the plains to 1,750 m near the Himalaya. From Madarihat it is a long drive, around 60 km, so most visitors treat it as an overnight stay at Rajabhatkhawa or Jayanti.
The usual activities are a jeep safari, a walk to the hill fort at Buxa from the Santalabari trailhead, and time by the Jayanti river with the Bhutan hills behind. Tigers are present but rarely seen; the reserve suits forest, birds and landscape. Check each activity with the forest office, as routes and treks change.
If you want a day trip, start early, choose one activity and keep the return drive in mind. If you are travelling with older parents, stick to a jeep drive and the riverside at Jayanti, and skip the longer treks.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Stay overnight if you can; the drive from Madarihat is long
- Check permits and safari booking at Rajabhatkhawa or Jayanti
- Keep treks short and take a guide for longer walks
- Carry water, snacks and warm layers
- Confirm the monsoon closure dates
