The short answer

Elephant safari at Hollong: what visitors should know first

Do it if you can stay near Hollong or reach the riding point early and are comfortable climbing a mounting platform. Rides are short, sit-high and sensory, but limited in number and not guaranteed, so book ahead and treat it as an add-on to a jeep safari.

Why it matters

Why Elephant safari at Hollong is worth your time

Elephant rides have long been associated with Hollong and the tall-grass habitat there. Being at animal level, from above the grass, gives a different perspective from a jeep and lets forest staff take small groups closer to rhino without the engine noise.

It is also a window on how the forest department works. The elephants and their mahouts are part of the park's working staff, so every ride reflects forest-department capacity: how many elephants are available, their health and rest schedules, and the weather. That is why the rides are limited, and why booking early and accepting last-minute changes matters.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Elephant rides start from the riding point outside the Hollong bungalow compound, before first light. You join a group on a platform, step across to a seat on a forest-department elephant and set off into the grassland with a mahout. The pace is slow and quiet, which is the point: rhinos and deer are less likely to move off than they are when a jeep arrives.

The ride is usually about an hour, covering a loop of grass, ponds and tree patches near Hollong. Sit still, keep hands inside the railing and follow the mahout's instructions about distance and noise. A few seconds of silence while a rhino is grazing metres away is what people remember.

Book the earliest slot you can, wear layers and carry a lightweight rain cover in the shoulder months. If you are not staying at Hollong, plan the transfer in advance because the first rides begin very early. Treat the ride as an add-on, not a substitute, for a jeep safari.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book the ride as far ahead as possible and check weather the night before
  • Wear layers, a scarf and closed shoes
  • Keep a secure strap on your camera
  • Follow the mahout's instructions on distance and noise
  • Have a back-up jeep plan in case rides are cancelled
