The short answer

Chilapata Forest: what visitors should know first

Add Chilapata if you have a spare morning and are curious about the corridor between Jaldapara and Buxa. It is more forest than grassland, so sightings are subtler, but the setting is quieter and the Nalraja Garh ruins make a good stop.

History and context

The story behind Chilapata Forest

Between 1892 and 1904 the Maharaja of Cooch Behar's hunting expeditions in and around the forest recorded one rhino killed, one injured and more than 14 sighted, according to Wikipedia, which shows how widely rhinos once ranged here. Today the forest is part of the corridor between Jaldapara and Buxa.

Why it matters

Why Chilapata Forest is worth your time

Chilapata matters because it is part of a larger elephant corridor. Forest here connects Jaldapara with Buxa Tiger Reserve, which in turn links to Bhutan and Assam, so protecting it keeps wildlife populations connected.

For visitors it adds depth to a Jaldapara trip. You see how a landscape works beyond a single park boundary, with forest, river, tea gardens and villages all sharing the space. It is also quieter, which suits people who prefer a slower, less crowded safari.

How to experience it

Chilapata is a dense forest in the Dooars, a few minutes from Hasimara and roughly 40 km from Alipurduar. It forms a wildlife corridor that connects Jaldapara National Park with Buxa Tiger Reserve, which is why elephants move through it. Rhinos were once recorded here but are now extremely rare; leopards remain common.

A visit usually means a jeep drive through sal and mixed forest with a forest-department guide, with a stop at the Nalraja Garh ruins on the Torsa bank. The pace is slow and the light is dappled, so it suits quiet watching, birds and butterflies better than big-animal spotting. Expect fewer vehicles than at the main Jaldapara routes.

If you want to stay, forest guest-houses and small resorts sit near the entrance. Book early, bring a torch and check which rooms are open. A morning is enough for most visitors, and it combines easily with a visit to Buxa or the highway to Alipurduar.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrange a permit, jeep and guide in advance
  • Wear closed shoes and insect repellent
  • Carry water and snacks; facilities are minimal
  • Ask about road conditions after rain
  • Combine with Nalraja Garh and the Buxa route
