Jaldapara is a national park first and a destination second. It sits in Alipurduar district on the banks of the Torsa, at the foot of the Eastern Himalayas, and covers roughly 216 square kilometres of tall grassland and riverine forest. It was declared a sanctuary in 1941 and became a national park in 2014. The reason to come is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros: a survey in March 2025 estimated about 331 animals here, the largest population in West Bengal.
The visit is built around safari slots. Jeeps and elephants are the only ways into the forest, and both run in the early morning and the afternoon, so each day has a simple rhythm of an early start, a long break and a quiet evening. The base is either Madarihat, the gateway town on the highway, or a small forest lodge at Hollong inside the park. Around them the Dooars offers a few good add-ons: Chilapata forest and the ruins at Nalraja Garh, the Toto village of Totopara, Buxa Tiger Reserve to the east, and Cooch Behar's palace to the south.
It is a manageable trip for families and older travellers if you plan for the season. The park closes for the monsoon, traditionally from about 16 June to 15 September, and the shoulder months are warm, humid and wet. November to February is the comfortable window, with cold dawns and dry, clear days. Jeep safaris involve bumpy tracks but little walking, and accommodation near the gate is simple but easy to reach.
