Hollong, inside the park
Best for: Wildlife-focused guests who can book early and tolerate basic facilities
Good to know: A small state-run forest lodge near the elephant riding point. You wake in the forest and get easy access to the first rides, but rooms are few, food is limited and medical help is far. Book as early as possible and keep a Madarihat fallback.

Madarihat
Best for: Families, first-time visitors and older travellers who want choice
Good to know: The gateway town has state lodges, private resorts and homestays. It is a short drive to the park gate, with more food options and easier transfers. The trade-off is the highway noise and a pre-dawn transfer for early slots.
Sights in this area: Buxa Tiger Reserve, Jaldapara National Park, Jeep safari in Jaldapara, Madarihat, Totopara

Chilapata and Hasimara side
Best for: Travellers who want a quieter forest stay and plan to visit Chilapata
Good to know: Small resorts and forest guest-houses sit near Chilapata. They are good for quiet and birding, but further from the Madarihat gate, so check transfer times and booking arrangements.
- 04
Alipurduar
Best for: Travellers arriving by train who want hospitals and a wider choice
Good to know: The district headquarters has hotels, restaurants and rail links, with New Alipurduar and Alipurduar Junction stations. It is about 50 km from Madarihat, so it works as a first or last night rather than a safari base.
Sights in this area: Buxa Tiger Reserve, Chilapata Forest, Jaldapara National Park, Madarihat

Hollong Tourist Lodge
Hollong, inside Jaldapara National Park, about 7 to 8 km from the Madarihat gate · Forest lodge · Price band: ₹₹
A small tourist lodge run by the state tourism development corporation, deep inside the park beside the Hollong elephant riding point. Its appeal is staying in the forest, not comfort.
For older travellers: Rooms are on a low-rise forest bungalow site with level walkways, but facilities are limited and the site is remote. A wildlife-focused stay means early starts, cold mornings and no quick access to a hospital. Check the room floor and bathroom access with the operator before you book.

What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
