Plan 01
1 day in Jaldapara
- 01
Day 1: One safari and a gateway afternoon
Book a jeep slot in advance and arrive at the booking point early. Spend two to three hours in the park, looking for rhino in the tall grass, and ask the guide which watchtower or pond is active. Return to Madarihat for a late breakfast and rest through the heat. In the late afternoon, take a short drive to see the tea-garden and river landscape around the town, or visit the booking office to plan the next day. This is a rushed day; two nights is more comfortable.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Madarihat Overnight base; pass-through otherwise Easy October to March Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.
Plan 02
2 days in Jaldapara

Day 1: Arrive and settle in
Arrive at Madarihat or Hollong, check in and rest after the journey. If you have an afternoon slot booked, take a jeep safari in the park's southern routes and watch the light change on the grass. Early dinner and bed, because tomorrow starts before dawn.

Day 2: Dawn elephant ride and a day trip
Take the first elephant ride at Hollong if seats are available, then return for breakfast. Use the rest of the day for a jeep safari or, if you are leaving, a drive to Chilapata forest and the Nalraja Garh ruins. Keep the return transfer in mind when you plan the final day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Chilapata Forest Half a day Moderate November to February Nalraja Garh 30 to 60 minutes Moderate November to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Chilapata Forest: The forest is reached by road, but tracks inside are rough and can be muddy after rain. Short walks to the ruins and viewpoints are uneven and shaded. Facilities are basic, and medical care is far, so carry any medication you need.
With parents at Nalraja Garh: The approach is by forest track and a short walk on uneven ground. The ruins have no seating, shade is patchy and facilities are absent. It is manageable for people with steady footing, but not ideal for walkers who need handrails.

Day 2: Elephant ride and Chilapata

Day 3: Totopara or Buxa
Choose one add-on: a respectful half-day visit to Totopara on a rough road, or a longer drive east to Buxa Tiger Reserve and the Jayanti river. If you are heading to Cooch Behar to fly or take a train, stop at the palace on the way and allow two to three hours there.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Totopara Half a day Moderate November to March Buxa Tiger Reserve Full day or 2 nights Moderate November to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Totopara: The single-lane road is rough and may be cut off by flooded streams during monsoon, so go in the dry season. Facilities in the village are basic. Older travellers should plan for a bumpy car ride, limited toilets and few places to sit.
With parents at Buxa Tiger Reserve: Roads and tracks are long, and treks to the fort and beyond are uphill and rough. Jeep safaris are easier but bumpy. Facilities are limited and medical care is in Alipurduar, so older travellers should keep to jeep drives and short walks.

Pacing
Pacing a Jaldapara trip for parents and children
- Choose the jeep over the elephant ride if climbing a platform or swaying is a concern; the jeep has little walking but bumpy tracks.
- Winter dawns are cold and damp. Carry a warm layer, scarf and gloves for early slots, and a rain cover in the shoulder months.
- Book the first slot of the day and an afternoon slot as a back-up, and keep the middle of the day free for rest.
- Stay at Madarihat if you want a hospital within reach and easier access; Hollong is atmospheric but remote.
- Skip watchtower climbs if the stairs are steep, and ask your guide to stay on level viewpoints.
- Carry medicines, bottled water and snacks for the safari; there are few shops inside the park.
