Most food on Koh Chang is Thai, plus seafood on the pier and Western food on the busy beaches. Vegetarian eating is possible but you must ask: Thai dishes often use fish sauce, shrimp paste or meat stock. Useful phrases are 'jay' (vegan, no meat, fish, egg or dairy) and 'mai sai nam pla' (no fish sauce). Fried rice, stir-fried vegetables, tofu dishes and fruit shakes are the usual safe choices once you have asked.

We could not verify any fully vegetarian or Jain restaurant on Koh Chang. Taste of India at White Sand Beach is a mixed Indian restaurant, and Tofu Kitchen at Kai Bae has clearly marked vegan options; confirm both before you go. Restaurants open and close often on small islands. Before you travel, ask your hotel what it can arrange, and consider a resort with a kitchen willing to prepare simple vegetarian or Jain meals. Jain diners should assume nothing and confirm onion, garlic and root-vegetable use with each kitchen.

Menus and kitchens change. If you follow a strict diet or have an allergy, confirm with the restaurant before you order.
