Before you go

Kolli Hills with elderly parents: what to know

  • Take motion-sickness medication before the ghat road and ask the driver to go slowly.
  • Do not attempt the full Agaya Gangai stairway unless you are fit; the climb back is the hard part.
  • Masila Falls, Vasalurpatty Lake and Seekuparai are the more manageable sights.
  • Carry water, a hat and a light layer; air cools on the plateau.
  • Travel in daylight and avoid the ghat road after dark or in heavy rain.
  • Check stay facilities in advance; amenities are limited on the hills.

Easiest first

Places in Kolli Hills sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Arapaleeswarar Temple (Places of worship · 45 to 90 minutes) — Mostly level around the temple, with a short walk from the parking area. Stone floors can be hot underfoot in the middle of the day, so go early or carry socks to wear until the entrance.
  • Botanical Garden and Herbal Farms (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Mostly gentle walking and seating. Verify paths and shade on arrival; no detailed accessibility information was found.
  • Ettukai Amman Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — A small temple with short walking distances. Floors can be hot or damp, and seating is limited. Check the exact access route locally.
  • Selur Nadu Viewpoint (Places to visit · 45 minutes) — Described as a viewpoint with few visitors. No accessibility details were found, so ask on arrival about steps and railings.
  • The 70 Hairpin Ghat Road Drive (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours each way with stops) — Passengers stay seated, but constant sharp turns can cause nausea. Ask for a slow pace, take medication in advance if needed and sit in the front seat.
  • Valvil Ori Festival and Memorial (Culture and craft · 1 to 3 hours depending on programme) — Mostly level, but crowds during the festival can be heavy and seating limited. Arrive early and keep to shaded areas.
  • Vasalurpatty Lake and Boating (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Level walking around the lake and boats with a seat. Check jetty steps and life jackets before boarding; boats can rock when boarding.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Masila Falls (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — A concrete path leads to the falls, so the walk is less rough than at Agaya Gangai, but there are steps and slopes. Rocks and the wet path are slippery. Take it slowly and use the handrails where present.
  • Seekuparai Viewpoint (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — The approach is a short walk, but the watch tower has stairs and at least one section was photographed without side bars. Seniors can enjoy the view from ground level and skip the tower.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Agaya Gangai Waterfall (Places to visit · 2.5 to 4 hours for the descent, a pause at the pool and the climb back) — Demanding. The descent is a long staircase of more than a thousand steps with a few viewpoints to pause at, and the climb back is the hard part. Rocks near the falls are slippery. Most older travellers should stop at the temple end or take only the first stretch.
  • Siddhar Caves near Agaya Gangai (Culture and craft · Add 1 to 2 hours to the waterfall visit) — Not recommended for seniors. Forest paths are uneven and are reached after or alongside the long waterfall stairway.

Practical tips for Kolli Hills

  • Ghat road. The climb has about 70 hairpin bends. Take motion-sickness medication, travel in daylight and avoid it in heavy rain.
  • Stairs. The Agaya Gangai stairway has well over a thousand steps each way. Carry water and plan a turn-back point.
  • Weather. The plateau is cooler than the plains. Carry a light layer and rain protection in monsoon months.
  • Facilities. Hotels, eateries and ATMs are limited. Carry cash and snacks, and confirm stays in advance.
  • Temple etiquette. Dress modestly at Arapaleeswarar and Ettukai Amman temples, remove footwear and ask before photographing.
  • Slippery rocks. Rocks near both waterfalls are slippery. Wear shoes with grip.
  • Festival. The Valvil Ori festival is held every August. Confirm dates locally and book stays early.
  • Guides. Use a local guide for forest paths and the Siddhar caves; do not wander off alone.
