Koraput travel guide

A cool, green highland town in Odisha's tribal south, where waterfalls, cave shrines, weekly markets and a famously scenic railway reward slow, patient travel.

Koraput sits at roughly 870 to 890 metres in the Eastern Ghats, in the far south of Odisha, and feels more like a hill station than the coastal plains most visitors associate with the state. The British chose it as a district headquarters in 1870 because its climate was kinder than that of nearby Jeypore, and the town still has the settled, low-rise feel of an administrative centre in the hills. The district around it is home to many Adivasi communities, among them the Gadaba, Paraja, Kondh and Bhatra, whose markets, festivals, weaving and house-painting are the real reason to come.

The town itself can be seen in half a day. The Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath temple stands on a hillock and is open to all, and the Tribal Museum behind it is a good primer before you go out into the villages. The rest of the district is a matter of day trips: the Duduma and Rani Duduma waterfalls, the Gupteswar cave shrine, the Deomali ridge, the old Jeypore capital at Nandapur and the Jain remains at Subai. Distances are long and the ghat roads are slow, so each of these takes most of a day with a hired car and driver.

Koraput suits travellers who are happy with simple facilities and uncertain timings. It is not a place of polished tourist infrastructure, and some attractions have little signage or seating. In return you get cool air, quiet roads, forested hills and the chance to see tribal culture on its own terms. Go with respect: ask before photographing people, buy crafts directly, and treat the Thursday and other weekly haats as working markets, not shows. Allow three days if you can, and keep a day in hand for rain or road delays.

After lunch, drive towards Jeypore and the Upper Kolab reservoir for an easy lakeside hour, or, if you leave early and do not mind a long day, head for the Duduma waterfall instead and skip the museum. Return to town before dark; ghat roads are slow in the evening.

Food to try in Koraput

Food and restaurants

Koraput's everyday food is Odia: rice, dalma, vegetable curries and fish, with tribal and Telugu influences at the edges. Simple dhabas along the highway and around the bus stand serve thalis and quick meals, while hotels in Koraput and Jeypore usually offer vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus. Ask what is freshly made, and be careful with raw salads and untreated water.

The district is better known for coffee than for restaurants. Koraput grows shade-grown Arabica, reported to have been started as a royal experimental plantation near Bichalkota in 1930, and the state tribal development cooperative sells it under the Koraput Coffee name. Look for packets at local shops, but do not expect formal plantation tours unless you arrange one in advance.

Weekly haats are the place to see local produce, forest products and vegetables, but treat them as markets for the local people first. If you are travelling with older relatives, eat at your hotel in the evenings and keep roadside snacks to freshly cooked items.

Shopping in Koraput

Shopping

The best things to buy here are handloom and craft pieces made in the district. Kotpad handloom, woven by Mirgan weavers and dyed with natural materials including aal root, is the best known, and is reported to have received a Geographical Indication listing. Look for fabric sold directly by weavers or through Odisha handloom outlets, and expect to pay more for hand-spun, naturally dyed cloth than for factory imitations.

Other district crafts mentioned in the official guide include terracotta from Girla and cow-dung toys from Jeypore, and Duruas around Boipariguda make many everyday objects from bamboo. Weekly haats sell forest produce and local goods, but ask politely before photographing sellers, and pay a fair price instead of bargaining hard. Carry small notes. Koraput Coffee is the easiest edible gift to carry home.

Choose without overthinking

Which Koraput experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Deomali or Duduma, if you only have one day for scenery?

Choose Duduma if you want a single dramatic sight with a viewpoint you can enjoy without a long walk. Choose Deomali if you prefer open ridge views and cool air, and are happy to walk. Deomali can be slippery on the way down and rules on plastic and overnight stays have been tightened, so check current conditions.

Gupteswar cave or the Jagannath temple in town?

The Jagannath temple is easy, close and open to visitors of all backgrounds, and takes an hour or two. Gupteswar is a full day trip with about 200 steps to the main lingam, but gives you a cave shrine in a forest setting. Pick Gupteswar for pilgrimage and landscape, and the town temple if time or knees are limited.

Train or road to reach Koraput?

The train is slower but scenic, especially on the ghat sections through tunnels and bridges, and it avoids long winding drives. Road is more flexible for reaching the airport at Jeypore or the coast. If you have the time, arrive by rail and use a hired car for the day trips.

Tribal Museum or a weekly haat for understanding local culture?

Start with the museum: it is in town, indoors and explains costumes, jewellery, masks and instruments in context. Visit a haat afterwards, preferably with a guide, as a working market rather than a performance, and always ask before taking anyone's photograph.

Know before you go

Koraput travel tips

  1. 01

    Rain and roads

June to August is very wet, with July the heaviest. Ghat roads and waterfall paths turn slippery, so travel in the cooler, drier months and check road conditions before long drives.

  2. 02

    Cold and altitude

Koraput sits at about 870 m, so mornings and evenings are cool, and December and January nights can be cold. Pack a warm layer even if the afternoons feel pleasant.

  3. 03

    Getting around

Hire a car with a driver for the day trips. Local autos work in town, and buses link Koraput with Jeypore and Visakhapatnam, but sights like Gupteswar and Duduma are far apart.

  4. 04

    Walking

Gupteswar has about 200 steps to the main lingam, and the base of Duduma needs a steep descent. Decide in advance who will climb and who will wait at the viewpoint.

  5. 05

    Money

Carry cash, including small notes, because remote markets and shrines may not take cards and ATMs thin out away from the towns.

  6. 06

    Dress and customs

Dress modestly at temples, remove shoes where asked and be ready for leather restrictions. At weekly haats and villages, ask before taking photographs of people.

  7. 07

    Timings and closures

Opening hours for the Tribal Museum and smaller sights are not well published, so confirm locally. Keep your plan flexible and avoid being on ghat roads after dark.

  8. 08

    Deomali rules

Reports from April 2025 describe a plastic ban with fines, daytime visiting hours and limits on private camping at Deomali. Check current rules before you go and carry your waste out.

Koraput with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one major outing per day. Most sights are 45 to 90 km from Koraput on winding ghat roads, and the drive is the tiring part.
  • Gupteswar involves about 200 steps to the main lingam, and Duduma's waterfall base is a steep, sometimes slippery descent; enjoy the viewpoint if the climb is too much.

Day trips from Koraput

Useful answers

Koraput FAQs

How many days do you need in Koraput?

Three days is comfortable. The town is quick, but the waterfalls, Gupteswar and Deomali are each a long day trip over winding roads.

What is the best time to visit Koraput?

November to February is the clearest and coolest. October and March also work. June to August brings very heavy rain, which makes waterfall and hill trips difficult.

How do you reach Koraput?

By train to Koraput Junction, by road via the Visakhapatnam highway, or by flight to Jeypore if services are running. Visakhapatnam airport is about 200 km away, so check current schedules.

Is Koraput suitable for senior travellers?

Yes, with a slow plan. The town sights are easy, but the long drives, steps at Gupteswar and descents at the waterfalls need care. Choose one outing a day and hire a driver.

Can visitors photograph tribal people and markets?

Ask first and accept a refusal. Rules around the Bonda areas have been tightened in the past, so check current guidance with the district administration or a licensed local guide.
