Plan 01

1 day in Koraput

  1. 01

Day 1: Town temple, museum and a waterfall

Start at the Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath temple on its hillock while it is quiet, then walk to the Tribal Museum behind it for a first look at the district's costumes, jewellery, masks and instruments. After lunch, drive towards Jeypore and the Upper Kolab reservoir for an easy lakeside hour, or, if you leave early and do not mind a long day, head for the Duduma waterfall instead and skip the museum. Return to town before dark; ghat roads are slow in the evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath Temple1 to 2 hoursModerateEarly morning, or during the Rath Yatra season in June or July if you enjoy crowds
Duduma WaterfallHalf to full day with the driveDemandingNovember to February for access; monsoon flow is stronger but conditions are riskier

Pace: Duduma Waterfall involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath Temple: You can climb steps to the temple or drive to the parking area nearer the shrine, which makes it manageable for most older visitors. Expect some steps inside the complex and a shoe-free walk on stone that can be hot at midday.

With parents at Duduma Waterfall: The viewpoint needs only a short walk, but the descent to the base is steep and can be slippery, and the drive is long. Older visitors should stay at the viewpoint and avoid the base after rain.

Plan 02

2 days in Koraput

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple, museum and Jeypore

Visit the Jagannath temple and the Tribal Museum in the morning. Drive to Jeypore after lunch, take in Jagannath Sagar and the old town, and look at the Upper Kolab reservoir on the way back.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Gupteswar or Duduma

Choose one full-day outing. Gupteswar is the pilgrim's choice, with a cave shrine reached by about 200 steps, and works well on a Thursday if you also want to pass the Onkadeli haat with a licensed guide. Duduma is the scenic choice, best from its viewpoint, and can be paired with Rani Duduma only if you are fit and have a long day.

Plan 03

3 days in Koraput

  1. 01

    Day 1: The town

Spend the morning at the Jagannath temple and Tribal Museum, then rest. In the late afternoon, take a short drive to a hill viewpoint near town and have an early dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Nandapur, Subai and the waterfalls

Head out early to Subai to see the weathered Jain monastery remains, then continue to Nandapur for the Batrisa Sinhasan and the red Ganesha image. Finish at Rani Duduma falls if the paths are dry. This is a day of country roads, so carry water and snacks.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Rani Duduma Falls1 to 2 hoursModeratePost-monsoon months and winter when paths are dry

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Rani Duduma Falls: Some walking is needed and rock surfaces can be slippery. Older travellers should look at the upper view and avoid the rocks near the lower pools.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Gupteswar or Deomali

Pick one. Gupteswar suits pilgrims and those who want a cave and forest setting. Deomali suits walkers who want the highest ground in Odisha and clear air, ideally on a dry winter day. Both involve long drives, so start by 7 am and be back before dusk.

Pacing

Pacing a Koraput trip for parents and children

  • Plan one major outing per day. Most sights are 45 to 90 km from Koraput on winding ghat roads, and the drive is the tiring part.
  • Gupteswar involves about 200 steps to the main lingam, and Duduma's waterfall base is a steep, sometimes slippery descent; enjoy the viewpoint if the climb is too much.
  • Carry water, snacks, motion-sickness tablets and any regular medicines. Facilities at remote sights are basic and hospitals are in the towns.
  • Avoid the monsoon months of June to August; roads and trails are slippery and views are often lost to cloud.
  • Dress in layers. Mornings and nights are cool even in warm months, and December and January evenings can be properly cold.
  • Hire a car with a driver who knows the ghat roads, and be back at the hotel before dark.
