Day 1: Churches, mosque and the river
Start at Cheriapally in the morning, when the church is quiet and the paintings are easy to see, then drive to Thazhathangady for Valiyapally and the old Juma Masjid, with a short walk by the Meenachil River. Have a lunch of fish curry with rice or tapioca and rest for an hour. In the late afternoon, visit the Old Seminary or CMS College for the printing and schooling story, and finish at Thirunakkara Temple around lamp-lighting time if you wish to see the temple in the evening.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Old Seminary (Orthodox Theological Seminary) 45 minutes to 1 hour Easy Morning on a working day; ask about visiting hours CMS College 30 to 60 minutes Moderate Weekday morning during term; avoid exam periods Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at CMS College: The campus is on a hill with slopes and steps between buildings, so older visitors should arrange a car to the gate and keep to the main paths. Shade is good under old trees.

Day 3: Out of town
Drive to Ettumanoor and Mannanam in the morning, then continue through rubber country to Aruvikkuzhi waterfall if it is between June and November. Return to town for a late lunch or an early night.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall 1.5 to 2 hours Moderate June to November, when the stream flows; dry in summer Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall: The viewing involves steps, and the rocks near the water are slippery in the rains. Older visitors may be happier at the top viewpoint than going down. Rain and wet steps make the visit risky for anyone with balance issues.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Kottayam trip for parents and children
- Plan one or two short sights each morning and rest through the afternoon; Kottayam's humidity is tiring even when temperatures look moderate.
- Churches, the mosque and temples are short, mostly level stops, but all involve bare feet on stone, so go early or late when the floor is not hot and ask for car drop-off at the gate.
- Aruvikkuzhi and the hilltop at Mannanam involve steps and slopes; view from the top if balance is a concern, and avoid wet steps.
- Festival days at Thirunakkara and Ettumanoor are very crowded; choose a non-festival day unless you particularly want the atmosphere.
- Carry a hat, an umbrella and water; showers can arrive at any time from June to November.
- Ask before photographing inside churches, mosques and temples, and dress modestly.
