Before you go
Kottayam with elderly parents: what to know
- Plan one or two short sights each morning and rest through the afternoon; Kottayam's humidity is tiring even when temperatures look moderate.
- Churches, the mosque and temples are short, mostly level stops, but all involve bare feet on stone, so go early or late when the floor is not hot and ask for car drop-off at the gate.
- Aruvikkuzhi and the hilltop at Mannanam involve steps and slopes; view from the top if balance is a concern, and avoid wet steps.
- Festival days at Thirunakkara and Ettumanoor are very crowded; choose a non-festival day unless you particularly want the atmosphere.
- Carry a hat, an umbrella and water; showers can arrive at any time from June to November.
- Ask before photographing inside churches, mosques and temples, and dress modestly.
Easiest first
Places in Kottayam sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (8)
- Kottayam Cheriapally (St Mary's Orthodox Church) (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The grounds are small and mostly level, with a step or two at the entrance and a cool, dim interior. There is not much seating, so older visitors may prefer a short visit. The road outside is busy, so arrange car drop-off at the gate.
- Kottayam Valiyapally (St Mary's Knanaya Church) (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The compound is close to the road and mostly level, with an interior that is cool but dim. Seating is limited and the floor is stone, so older visitors should plan a short visit and a car drop-off close to the gate.
- Kottayam's Publishing Heritage (Printing and Book Trail) (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours) — Mostly short walks or short car hops on level ground, with benches and cafes in town. Older visitors should arrange a car between stops, as the sites are spread across the town.
- Kottayam-style Meen Curry (Food and restaurants · 1 hour for a meal) — Meals are seated and easy for all ages, but fish curry can be very hot and has bones. Ask for mild spice and boneless pieces, and take care with bones if swallowing is a concern.
- Old Seminary (Orthodox Theological Seminary) (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The campus is mostly flat but has steps between buildings and little shaded seating. The main building is a multi-storey timber structure, so ask before assuming access beyond the ground floor. Arrange car access to the gate.
- Rubber Plantation Country (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The drive is easy and level from the car, but walking among trees can be slippery in the rains and mosquitoes are common. Older visitors can enjoy the view from a roadside stop and a short walk.
- Thazhathangady Juma Masjid (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — Paths are short and level in the courtyard, but the interior is barefoot and has step-ups. There is limited shade outside, so go early or late. Older visitors should arrange car drop-off at the gate.
- Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The temple is in the middle of town and reachable by car or auto to the gate. The ground is level inside the walls but you will be barefoot on stone that gets hot at midday, so go early or late. Seating is limited; the festival days are very crowded.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours) — The viewing involves steps, and the rocks near the water are slippery in the rains. Older visitors may be happier at the top viewpoint than going down. Rain and wet steps make the visit risky for anyone with balance issues.
- CMS College (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes) — The campus is on a hill with slopes and steps between buildings, so older visitors should arrange a car to the gate and keep to the main paths. Shade is good under old trees.
- Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Distance and walking are modest, but the precinct has steps, hot stone and queues on busy days. Go by car to the gate and keep the visit short; festival days are very crowded and not suited to older visitors.
- St Joseph's Monastery, Mannanam (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The monastery is on a hilltop with steps and slopes, and there is limited seating. Pilgrims queue at the tomb on busy days, so arrive early. Arrange car access to the nearest gate.

Practical tips for Kottayam
- Humidity. Kottayam stays humid year-round, with average highs of about 30 to 34 C and very high rain from June to November. Plan outdoor sights for the morning, rest after lunch and carry water.
- Getting around. Autos and local taxis cover town sights, and a hired car with a driver is easiest for Ettumanoor, Mannanam and Aruvikkuzhi. Agree the fare or use a taxi app before setting off.
- Dress. Dress modestly for churches, the mosque and temples, with covered shoulders and knees. Expect to remove footwear and be ready for hot stone at midday.
- Religious sites. Most are working places of worship. Ask before entering or photographing, avoid service and prayer times, and check whether non-Hindus may enter temple precincts.
- Rain. Showers are common from June to November and can come without warning. Carry an umbrella, and avoid wet steps at the waterfall and at hilltop churches.
- Money. Cards work in hotels and larger shops, but small eateries, autos and temples often prefer cash, so carry small notes.
- Photography. Photography is often restricted inside temples and sometimes in churches; ask first and respect any signs.
- Festival crowds. Thirunakkara and Ettumanoor festivals draw very large crowds, with road closures and booked-out rooms nearby. Check dates before booking.
