Area by area

Kottayam neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Central Kottayam, near Thirunakkara and the town centre

Best for: First-time visitors who want to reach the churches, mosque and temple quickly

Good to know: Convenient for short drives and restaurants, with business hotels and some simple guesthouses. Traffic is busy, so check lift access, car drop-off and noise if you are travelling with older relatives.

  2. 02

    Near Kottayam railway station (Nagampadam)

Best for: Travellers arriving or leaving by train

Good to know: Practical for early trains and onward trips to Kumarakom or Vagamon. It is about 2.5 km from the centre, so expect a short auto or taxi ride to most sights.

  3. 03

    Kumarakom backwater resorts

Best for: Travellers who want a lakeside stay and day trips into Kottayam town

Good to know: Quieter and greener than the town, with houseboats and resorts on Vembanad Lake. It has its own Raahzo guide; allow time for the drive to town sights and book ahead in the cooler months.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
