Before you go
Lhaviyani Atoll with elderly parents: what to know
- Ask your resort about seaplane boarding. Floating platforms and short steps are normal, and staff can usually assist.
- Choose a small island or a room near the main area to keep walking short in the heat.
- Carry travel insurance with medical evacuation cover; Naifaru's hospital is the only one in the atoll.
- Snorkel in the morning and rest after lunch. Sun and salt tire people quickly.
- Bring regular medicines in the original packaging, plus a prescription letter, and keep them in hand luggage.
- Do not attempt channel dives such as Kuredu Express without recent experience.
Easiest first
Places in Lhaviyani Atoll sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Kuredu House Reef (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — Entry from the beach is gentle for swimmers and needs no boat. Older visitors can use a float vest and snorkel with a companion. Hot midday sun is the main discomfort, so wear a rash vest and avoid the middle of the day.
- Naifaru (Culture and craft · 2-4 hours) — The island is small and flat, so walking is easy, but there is little shade at midday and few places to sit. The hospital on the island is the atoll's only medical facility, which is reassuring, but serious cases may need transfer elsewhere.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Fushifaru Thila (Places to visit · Half a day by boat including briefing and surface interval) — This is a boat-based activity with no shore access. Getting in and out of a dhoni or dive boat involves a ladder or low step, and a swell can make it uncomfortable. Older travellers who are confident swimmers can snorkel from the boat; others should skip it rather than risk the entry.
- The Shipyard (Places to visit · Half a day by boat) — Boat entry and exit are required and the current can be strong depending on tide. Suitable for fit, certified divers; the shallow sections can also work for snorkellers if the guide confirms conditions, but older or frail travellers should not attempt it.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Kuredu Express (Places to visit · Half a day including briefing) — This is a technical drift dive for experienced divers only. Strong, variable current makes it unsuitable for anyone with limited fitness, heart or lung conditions, or limited diving experience. Older travellers should enjoy the sharks through photographs and talks at the dive centre.

Practical tips for Lhaviyani Atoll
- Heat and sun. Highs are around 31 degrees C all year at the nearest climate station, with strong sun. Wear a rash vest, hat and reef-safe sunscreen, and rest in the afternoon.
- Getting here. Almost everyone flies to Malé and takes a resort seaplane. Seaplanes operate in daylight, so a late flight may mean a night in Malé.
- Money. Resorts price in US dollars or local currency; check current rates and card use in advance. Small shops in Naifaru use cash.
- Dress. Resort wear is relaxed, but on local islands like Naifaru cover shoulders and knees. Check local rules before swimming off a local island beach.
- Alcohol and food. Alcohol is served at resorts, not on local islands. Ask your resort about vegetarian, Jain or other dietary needs in writing before you book.
- Medical care. The atoll's only hospital is in Naifaru. Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, and carry regular medicines in hand luggage.
- Marine etiquette. Do not touch or chase turtles, rays or sharks, and do not stand on coral. Follow your guide's instructions at protected sites.
- Luggage. Seaplane baggage limits are often strict. Check your resort's allowance and pack soft bags.
