Lhaviyani Atoll, also called Faadhippolhu Atoll, lies about 140 km north of Malé. Its capital is Naifaru, and Wikipedia counts roughly 52 to 54 islands, of which only four are inhabited: Naifaru, Hinnavaru, Kurendhoo and Olhuvelifushi. Most visitors never see them, because the atoll is known mainly for a handful of resort islands and its dive sites.
The resorts here include Kuredu, Komandoo and Hurawalhi, and the usual way in is a seaplane from Velana International Airport in Malé. Kuredu is a large island with many restaurants and a long-established dive centre. Komandoo and Hurawalhi are adults-only, which matters a great deal when you are planning a family trip.
The underwater draw is real. Fushifaru Thila is known for reef manta rays at a cleaning station, Kuredu Express is a channel dive with grey reef sharks, and the Shipyard offers wreck sections for different diver levels. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the better manta windows reported by dive guides are October to November and February to April.
For Indian travellers, the practical issues are cost, remoteness and food. Almost everything happens on a resort island, so vegetarian, Indian and Jain meals depend on what your resort can arrange, and none of the three resorts we checked says anything about them on its website. Ask in writing before you pay. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is worth having, since the atoll's only hospital is in Naifaru.

Lhaviyani Atoll itinerary
One good day
1 day in Lhaviyani Atoll
Treat the atoll as a single-resort stay. If you arrive by seaplane in the morning, settle in, snorkel the house reef before the sun gets high, and keep the afternoon for rest. A one-day visit is only realistic as a stopover, and a day trip from Malé is not practical by seaplane for most travellers.
