Mandla is a small district town in the Mahakoshal region of Madhya Pradesh, set in a loop of the Narmada that wraps it on three sides. Most visitors pass through on the way to Kanha, but the town and its surroundings have their own history. In the 17th century it became the capital of the Garha-Mandla kingdom, one of the Gond dynasties that ruled central India, and the ruined palaces on the river are what remain of that court.
The pace here is slow. There are no big museums and few tourist facilities, so the pleasures are simple: dawn at the ghats, an hour at Moti Mahal in Ramnagar, the braided river at Sahastradhara and the forest roads towards Kanha. The district is also largely tribal, with the Gonds the largest community, so the region feels different from the better-known heritage circuits of Madhya Pradesh.
Mandla works best as a one- or two-night stop combined with a Kanha safari, or as a quiet day trip from Jabalpur. Keep expectations modest on facilities, hire a car with a driver, and use the cooler months, when roads are dry and the sun is gentle. For older travellers, the main considerations are heat, uneven ground at the ruins and long drives rather than anything strenuous.
