Before you go
Mandla with elderly parents: what to know
- Hire a car with a driver; public transport is limited and roads between sights can be long.
- Moti Mahal has steep, narrow stairs; older travellers can enjoy the courtyard and ground floor without climbing.
- Avoid April to June when heat is severe, and carry water and a hat at all times.
- Facilities such as toilets, seating and shade are basic at most sights, so plan breaks and carry essentials.
- Keep safaris short, ideally one morning drive, because jeeps are bumpy and early mornings are cold.
- Do not drive long distances after dark; forest roads are poorly lit.
Easiest first
Places in Mandla sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Garam Pani Kund (Hot Water Pool) (Places to visit · 20 to 40 minutes) — The site is close to the road and mostly level, but surfaces around water can be wet and slippery. Facilities and seating may be basic, and the smell of sulphur can bother some visitors.
- Ghughua Fossil Park (National Fossil Park) (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours on site; plus a long drive) — The park is small with short, mostly level walks, but facilities are reportedly basic and shade is limited. The long drive is the harder part for older travellers, so build in breaks.
- Narmada Ghats, Mandla (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — Access is mostly by short walks or steps down to the water; some ghats have no railings and wet steps can be slippery. A hired car can usually get close, but the last stretch is on foot. Seating is limited, and the river edge can be hot by midday.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Sahastradhara (Narmada) (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The approach involves uneven rock and river-edge walking, which can be slippery. There is little shade or seating, so it suits those comfortable on rough ground. Seniors may prefer to view from the bank rather than clamber over rocks.

Practical tips for Mandla
- Heat. Mandla's IMD normals show average daily highs of about 38 to 41 degrees Celsius from April to May. Do outdoor sights early and rest in the afternoon.
- Monsoon. July and August bring heavy rain, with several hundred millimetres each. Kanha closes, rivers swell and Sahastradhara becomes unsafe.
- Getting around. Hire a car with a driver. Public transport to Ramnagar and the park gates is limited, and road conditions vary.
- Walking and stairs. Moti Mahal has steep, narrow stairs and uneven floors. Wear shoes with grip and keep to the courtyard if mobility is limited.
- Money. Carry some cash for small purchases and entry fees, as digital payment coverage may be patchy outside town. ATMs may be limited.
- Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly at the ghats and ask before photographing people bathing or praying.
- Permits for Kanha. Kanha safari permits are booked through the forest department's official system, so reserve well ahead and check closure dates.
- After dark. Avoid driving on forest roads at night. Plan to be back in town or at your lodge by dusk.
