Plan 01

1 day in Mandla

  1. 01

    Day 1: Ghats and Ramnagar

Start at sunrise at one of the Narmada ghats in town, then drive about 24 km to Moti Mahal at Ramnagar for a slow morning among the Gond ruins. After lunch and a rest, stop at Sahastradhara on the northern edge of Mandla to see the river braided over rock, and return to town in the late afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Sahastradhara (Narmada)45 minutes to 1 hourModerateOctober to February; avoid peak monsoon when rocks are submerged

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Sahastradhara (Narmada): The approach involves uneven rock and river-edge walking, which can be slippery. There is little shade or seating, so it suits those comfortable on rough ground. Seniors may prefer to view from the bank rather than clamber over rocks.

Day 2: Kanha or the road to Jabalpur

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Mandla trip for parents and children

  • Hire a car with a driver; public transport is limited and roads between sights can be long.
  • Moti Mahal has steep, narrow stairs; older travellers can enjoy the courtyard and ground floor without climbing.
  • Avoid April to June when heat is severe, and carry water and a hat at all times.
  • Facilities such as toilets, seating and shade are basic at most sights, so plan breaks and carry essentials.
  • Keep safaris short, ideally one morning drive, because jeeps are bumpy and early mornings are cold.
  • Do not drive long distances after dark; forest roads are poorly lit.
