Why it matters
Why Maredumilli Forest Treks is worth your time
Maredumilli's forests are part of the Eastern Ghats and are rich in biodiversity, with semi-evergreen trees, streams running over rock and undulating hills. Walking through them with a guide is the best way to understand the place, beyond the roadside waterfalls.
The treks are also part of a community-based scheme. The eco-tourism project is run with tribal forest protection committees from Valamuru and nearby villages, so hiring their guides puts money directly into the communities that look after the forest. Follow the project rules: no smoking, alcohol or plastic, and carry all litter out.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
The eco-tourism project lists three treks. The Valamuru to Amruthadhara route is about 8 km and ends at the Amruthadhara waterfall; a cross-country trek runs from Tiger Camp to Vijjuluru, also about 8 km; and an adventure trek runs about 10 km from Valamuru to Nelluru. Guides come from the local tribal community.
Start early in the morning, when the forest is cool and birds are active, and allow most of the day for any of the routes. Paths cross streams and rocky ground under a tall forest canopy, and there are no shops or toilets on the way. Arrange transport back from the end point before you start.
Carry at least two litres of water per person, snacks, rain protection and shoes with good grip. In the monsoon, paths are muddy and leeches are common; after October they dry out and walking is easier. Confirm the route and conditions with the eco-tourism staff on the day.
