Maredumilli is a village and mandal in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, about 85-90 km north of Rajahmundry on the road to Bhadrachalam. The mandal, long part of East Godavari and then Alluri Sitharama Raju district, now falls in the new Polavaram district. It is surrounded by semi-evergreen forest, streams running over rock and low, wooded hills.

The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department runs an eco-tourism project here, managed with the tribal Vana Samrakshana Samithis of Valamuru, Somireddypalem and Valmeekipeta. Its centre is about 4 km from the village on the Bhadrachalam road, where the Jungle Star campsite sits beside the Valamuru river, facing a hill linked in local tradition to the Ramayana battle of Vali and Sugriva. Forest treks start from here.

Along the main road are the seasonal waterfalls of Jalatarangini and Amruthadhara and the Manyam viewpoint. Further afield are Rampa waterfall and Bhupathipalem reservoir near Rampachodavaram, and the Gudisa hilltop grassland, known for sunrise. The area is also known for bamboo chicken, cooked inside lengths of bamboo, and for its role as a film location.

Maredumilli suits travellers who want forest, water and quiet rather than sights. For older visitors, the roadside waterfalls and viewpoints are manageable with care, but forest paths are slippery after rain, and facilities are basic. A car with a driver from Rajahmundry is the practical way to visit.

Food to try in Maredumilli

Food and restaurants

The local speciality is bamboo chicken: chicken marinated with spices, packed into a length of green bamboo and roasted over a fire. It is sold at roadside stalls and resorts around Maredumilli, with bamboo biryani also on offer. Ask for it to be made fresh, and check that it is cooked through.

Otherwise, food is simple Andhra fare: rice, dal, vegetable curries and pickles. Eat at your camp or resort, carry water and snacks for the waterfalls, and buy supplies in Rajahmundry before you set out.

Shopping in Maredumilli

Shopping

Shopping is limited. The annual Maredumilli tourism festival brings stalls of organic produce, coffee and tribal handicrafts. For a wider choice of textiles and sweets, shop in Rajahmundry. Carry cash, as card payments are unreliable in the forest area, and buy anything you need for the trip before leaving Rajahmundry.

Choose without overthinking

Which Maredumilli experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Araku has more sights, better hotels and a scenic train. Maredumilli is smaller, more forested and quieter, and closer to Rajahmundry.

Jalatarangini or Amruthadhara for older parents?

Jalatarangini. Its walk is short with railings, while Amruthadhara needs a steep, slippery descent of about 1 km.

Stay at the eco-camp or in Rajahmundry?

The camp for atmosphere and early forest walks; Rajahmundry for comfort, medical access and better food.

Monsoon or winter?

The monsoon for full waterfalls, winter for comfortable walking and safer paths.
