Murud is a small coastal town in Raigad district, roughly 150 to 165 km south of Mumbai depending on the route, and it is known mainly for the island fort that stands in the sea a few kilometres to its south. Janjira was held for centuries by the Siddis, rulers of African descent who were the Nawabs of the Janjira state, and it is remembered for resisting Maratha, Portuguese and other attacks. The fort is reached by sailboat from Rajapuri, and the crossing is as much a part of the visit as the ruins.

The town itself is easy to understand. A long west-facing beach sits at its edge, the Nawab's old palace stands in the town as a private building, and a hill to the north carries the Datta temple above the palms. A few kilometres out are the Khokri tombs of the Janjira rulers, the ruined sea fort of Padmadurg built to challenge Janjira, and a century-old dam with a seasonal waterfall at Garambi. Most of this fills a single unhurried day.

Murud rewards a plan built around the weather. The fort boats are usually suspended through the monsoon, and the town is at its most comfortable from about November to February, when days are warm but not punishing. Two nights lets you cross to the fort in the morning, rest through the afternoon and see the beach at sunset. Add Kashid, Korlai Fort and the Phansad sanctuary if you have a third day and a car.

For older travellers the main questions are the boat boarding, which involves a step down onto a rocking sailboat from the jetty, and the uneven stone inside the fort. Everything else, the town, beach road, tombs and palace exterior, is easy going. Hotels are mostly mid-range beach resorts and family-run lodges, so check lifts, ground-floor rooms and meal arrangements before you book.

1 day in Murud Janjira

Reach Rajapuri jetty in the morning, ideally soon after the boats start running, and cross by sailboat to Janjira Fort. Drive or take an auto to the Khokri tombs and look at the Nawab's palace from the street, then end on Murud beach for the sunset, with the fort visible to the south.

Food to try in Murud Janjira

The local food is Konkani and Malwani seafood: fried fish, fish curry with coconut and kokum, prawn curry and the fish thali served with rice and bhakri. Patil Khanaval near the beach is the best-known thali house in Murud, with surmai, pomfret and prawn thalis plus vegetarian ones, and Hotel Vinayak and Hotel Anand Vatika are other beach-area names that travel guides mention. Solkadi, the pink kokum and coconut drink, is the standard digestive. Ask what was landed that morning, since not every kitchen serves fish at its freshest.

On the beach and near the bus stand you will find batata vada, pakoda, bhel and coconut water, and the resorts on the beach road serve seafood meals to non-residents as well. Vegetarian travellers will manage with dal, vegetable curries and bhakri at most thali places, but the choice is narrower than for fish eaters. Check opening hours in the off-season, because small places close early or for a day when footfall is low.

Shopping in Murud Janjira

Shopping

Shopping in Murud is modest and practical. Local buys include coconut chikki and barfi from the shops near the bus stand, and spice mixes and dried fish if you can carry them. There are no craft markets of the Jaipur kind, so treat shopping as something to do on the walk between the beach and the bus stand.

Souvenir stalls near the jetty at Rajapuri and the beach sell shells and trinkets. Prices are negotiable at stalls but not in the sweet shops. Carry small notes, because card acceptance is patchy in a town this size, and plan to buy food gifts on your last afternoon so they do not sit in the heat.

Choose without overthinking

Which Murud Janjira experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Janjira Fort or Padmadurg (Kasa Fort)?

Janjira is the one to visit: it has a regular boat crossing, an open interior with gates, cannons and ruins, and a guide you can hire at the jetty. Padmadurg is a smaller sea fort that is usually seen from the shore, since entry needs permission and a private boat. Look at it from Murud beach and spend your effort on Janjira.

Murud beach or Kashid beach?

Murud is the practical choice if you are staying in town: a walkable west-facing beach with the fort in view and a good sunset, though the southern end has dips. Kashid is a wider, whiter beach with shade trees and a quieter feel on weekdays, but it is a drive away and the hotels sit back from the sand.

Khokri tombs or the Nawab's palace?

The Khokri tombs are the better stop: three Indo-Saracenic tombs of Janjira's rulers that you can walk around. The Nawab's palace is private and can only be seen from outside, so it suits a ten-minute stop on the way to somewhere else.

A full day at Murud, or Murud as part of an Alibaug trip?

If you are already in Alibaug, Murud is a long day out of about 50 km each way. A night in Murud makes the fort crossing, sunset and tombs feel less rushed and avoids driving in the dark. Staying in Murud also puts Kashid and Korlai on the way back.

Know before you go

Murud Janjira travel tips

  1. 01

    Monsoon closure

Fort boats are normally suspended during the monsoon, roughly late May to end August. Confirm that the crossing is running before you travel, and keep a day in hand in September and October in case of weather.

  2. 02

    Boat crossing

Sailboats leave from Rajapuri jetty and return you the same way. Agree the return arrangement and the time you will spend on the island before boarding. Carry a small waterproof bag and wear shoes that grip.

  3. 03

    Heat and shade

The fort has little shade and the stone gets hot. In March to May go in the first hours after the boats start, carry water, and add a cap or umbrella.

  4. 04

    Water and food

Little or no food and water is sold inside the fort, so carry bottled water and a snack. Eat your main meal back in town.

  5. 05

    Getting around

Autos and shared tempos work in town, and an auto to the jetty is the usual choice. For Kashid, Korlai and Phansad in a day, hire a car and driver.

  6. 06

    Beach safety

Murud's southern beach has unexpected dips, and low tide can draw swimmers into deeper water. Swim near the shore only, in the northern part, and keep children close.

  7. 07

    Money

Carry cash in small notes for autos, boatmen, guides and snack stalls. ATMs exist in town but can run low on weekends.

  8. 08

    Dress and photography

Dress modestly at the Datta temple and Nandgaon temple, and remove shoes at the entrance. Photography is fine across the fort and beach; avoid photographing worshippers inside shrines.

Murud Janjira with elderly parents: what to know

  • Boarding the Rajapuri sailboat means a step from the jetty onto a moving deck. Ask the boatman to hold the boat steady and take your time; carry nothing in your hands.
  • Inside Janjira Fort the ground is uneven stone with steps and no shade for much of the walk. Go early, carry water because little is available on the island, and set a sitting-down pace.

Day trips from Murud Janjira

Useful answers

Murud Janjira FAQs

How do you get to Janjira Fort?

By sailboat from Rajapuri jetty, a few kilometres from Murud. Boats take you across and bring you back, and the crossing takes a short time. Check the current timings with boatmen or the local tourism office.

Is Murud Janjira open during the monsoon?

Usually not. Passenger boats to the fort are normally suspended for the monsoon, roughly late May to end August in recent years. Check with the Maharashtra Maritime Board or the jetty before you plan a trip.

How many days do you need in Murud Janjira?

One long day covers the fort, tombs and beach. Two nights allows an easy pace and a day for Kashid, Korlai or Phansad.

Is Murud Janjira suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, with care. The town and beach are easy, but boat boarding and the fort's uneven stone need patience. A hired car, ground-floor rooms and a rest after lunch make it comfortable.

Can I visit Padmadurg (Kasa Fort)?

It sits on a rock in the sea and is hard to visit. Accounts say you need permission from the customs authorities and a private boat, so most visitors view it from the shore.
