1 day in Murud Janjira

Day 1: Fort crossing and a sunset beach
Reach Rajapuri jetty in the morning, ideally soon after the boats start running, and cross by sailboat to Janjira Fort. Allow about two hours on the island for the gate, the cannons, the freshwater well and the ruined palace. Return for a Konkani fish thali in Murud and rest through the early afternoon. Drive or take an auto to the Khokri tombs and look at the Nawab's palace from the street, then end on Murud beach for the sunset, with the fort visible to the south.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Janjira Fort About 2 hours on the island, plus about 30 to 45 minutes for the crossing and queue Moderate November to February, first boats of the day; the fort is usually closed to boats in the monsoon Khokri Tombs 30 to 45 minutes Easy Morning or late afternoon for softer light; October to February Murud Beach 1 to 2 hours Easy Late afternoon to sunset; November to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Janjira Fort: The boat boarding involves a step onto a rocking sailboat, and the fort has uneven stone, steps and little shade or seating. Many older visitors enjoy the crossing and the lower areas, and skip the upper walls. Take a guide for explanations, stay on level paths, and go early.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Murud Janjira trip for parents and children
- Boarding the Rajapuri sailboat means a step from the jetty onto a moving deck. Ask the boatman to hold the boat steady and take your time; carry nothing in your hands.
- Inside Janjira Fort the ground is uneven stone with steps and no shade for much of the walk. Go early, carry water because little is available on the island, and set a sitting-down pace.
- The Datta temple is reached by about 200 steps or a motorable road. Choose the road if knees are a worry.
- Pick a hotel with ground-floor rooms or a lift, and confirm meals, because Murud has few restaurants outside the beach area.
- Swimming at Murud has dips, and low tide can pull swimmers out. Paddle near the edge only, and do not let older swimmers go in alone.
- Avoid the monsoon for this trip: boats stop, roads are damaged by rain and landslips can slow the drive. November to February is kindest.
