How to reach Murud Janjira by air

The nearest major airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (BOM), about 150 to 165 km away. Allow about 4 to 5 hours by road, traffic dependent; a pre-booked taxi is the simplest arrangement.

How to reach Murud Janjira by train

Roha (ROHA) on the Konkan Railway is the usual railhead, about 50 to 65 km from Murud depending on the source, with taxis for the rest. Panvel (PNVL) is the larger junction on the way from Mumbai and Pune.

How to reach Murud Janjira by road

Murud lies on the coast road from Alibaug, about 50 km away, and is reached from Mumbai via Panvel, Pen and Roha on NH66, or by ferry from the Gateway of India to Mandwa (not in the monsoon) and then by road through Revdanda. State transport buses run from Alibaug and other nearby towns.

Getting around Murud Janjira

Autos and shared tempos serve the town, the beach and Rajapuri jetty. For Kashid, Korlai, Phansad and the Khokri tombs in one day, hire a car and driver. Sailboats from the jetty cross to the fort.

Easy transfers to and in Murud Janjira

  • Boarding the Rajapuri sailboat means a step from the jetty onto a moving deck. Ask the boatman to hold the boat steady and take your time; carry nothing in your hands.
  • Inside Janjira Fort the ground is uneven stone with steps and no shade for much of the walk. Go early, carry water because little is available on the island, and set a sitting-down pace.
  • The Datta temple is reached by about 200 steps or a motorable road. Choose the road if knees are a worry.
  • Avoid the monsoon for this trip: boats stop, roads are damaged by rain and landslips can slow the drive. November to February is kindest.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
