Plan 01

1 day in Namdapha

  1. 01

Day 1: Miao and a short taste of the forest

A single day is tight and only realistic if you are already staying near Miao. Visit the Field Director's office to confirm your permit, then drive the rough forest road to Deban if your booking allows. Spend a couple of hours walking the river bank, watching birds, and return before dark. If you cannot reach Deban, spend the day in Miao instead, including the Choephelling Tibetan Settlement. Confirm all permits and timings with the reserve office in advance.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
MiaoHalf a day to one nightEasyNovember to March
Deban2 to 3 nightsModerateNovember to March; early mornings for birds
Choephelling Tibetan Settlement1 to 2 hoursEasyDaytime; avoid early morning and late evening

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Deban: The camp itself is flat and quiet, but the road in is rough and long, rooms are simple, hot water may need arranging and the nearest medical care is in Miao. Fine for fit, flexible seniors who accept basic comforts.

Plan 02

2 days in Namdapha

  1. 01

    Day 1: Road to Deban

Leave Miao early, confirm your booking at the Field Director's office, and drive to Deban in daylight. Settle in, then walk the river bank near camp for an evening of birdwatching. Keep the first afternoon light, since the road is rough.

Day 2: River bank and return

Rise before dawn for birds and gibbon calls, then take a short guided walk. If conditions and fitness allow, cross the Noa-Dihing and walk part of the Haldibari trail. Return to Miao in the afternoon and, if time permits, visit the Tibetan settlement.

MiaoHalf a day to one nightEasyNovember to March

Pace: Haldibari Trail involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Haldibari Trail: Not suited to anyone with knee, balance or heart concerns. The route has a river crossing, a climb of roughly 300 m in older accounts, uneven ground and leeches. Fit seniors can stop at the river and enjoy the bank near Deban instead.

Plan 03

3 days in Namdapha

  1. 01

    Day 1: Miao to Deban

Confirm permits in Miao, buy supplies, and drive to Deban in daylight. Walk the river bank at dusk and listen for gibbons and nightbirds.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Haldibari trail

Start at first light with a guide, cross the Noa-Dihing and climb to the ridge towards Haldibari. Return to Deban by afternoon, or overnight at the campsite if you arranged it in advance.

Day 3: Birds and onward road

Spend the morning birdwatching near Deban, then drive back to Miao. If you have a spare day, break the road to Assam with a stop at Jairampur's war cemetery and Pangsau Pass.

Pacing

Pacing a Namdapha trip for parents and children

  • Plan for a long rough road. The drive from Dibrugarh to Miao is about 156 to 160 km by the district website, and Deban is a further forest road away, so break the journey if you can.
  • Stay at Deban and take short river-bank walks. Skip the river crossings and ridge treks unless you are fit and sure-footed.
  • Carry regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit and spare glasses. Medical help is limited beyond Miao.
  • Book accommodation weeks ahead and confirm what is currently open, as rooms are simple and few.
  • Allow buffer days for permits, weather and river levels, and avoid the monsoon from May to September.
  • Use a licensed local guide and tell the camp where you are going and when you expect to return.
