Deban (inside the reserve)
Best for: Birdwatchers and trekkers who want to start walking at dawn
Good to know: A forest rest house, cottages, simple huts and campsites sit beside the Noa-Dihing. Rooms are basic, power and hot water can be limited, and bookings go through the Field Director's office in Miao. It is the best base for the forest, but not for anyone who needs comfort.
Sights in this area: Birdwatching Near Deban, Haldibari Trail
- 02
Miao
Best for: Permit stops, logistics and older travellers who want ordinary services
Good to know: Miao is the gateway town, with small lodges, eateries, the reserve offices and the Tibetan settlement. It is a sensible night before and after the forest and the last place with medical services and reliable supplies.
Sights in this area: Choephelling Tibetan Settlement, Deban, Namdapha Butterfly Festival, Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve
- 03
Jairampur and Margherita
Best for: Breaking the road journey and visiting the Stilwell Road sights
Good to know: Both lie on the road from Assam. The district website notes that Jairampur has limited hotel choice and suggests booking the Circuit House ahead, so check current options.
- 04
Dibrugarh or Tinsukia (Assam)
Best for: Arrival days and fewer surprises with trains and flights
Good to know: Both have the widest choice of hotels, transport and supplies. Staying overnight before the long drive can make the journey less tiring.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
