The story behind Nong Nooch Tropical Garden

The Tansacha family bought the land in 1954 and the site was developed by Nongnooch Tansacha and Kampon Tansacha. It was opened to visitors in 1980.

Why it matters

Why Nong Nooch Tropical Garden is worth your time

Nong Nooch began as a private project of the Tansacha family, who bought the land in 1954 and opened the gardens to the public in 1980. It grew into one of the largest botanical gardens in Southeast Asia, and its cycad collection and gene bank give it scientific weight beyond its role as a tourist stop.

For travellers from India it offers a green, shaded contrast to beaches and malls, and its themed gardens make it easy to enjoy even if you have no plant knowledge. Be aware that some animal-related shows exist; if that matters to you, choose the gardens over the shows.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive at opening time to make the most of the cooler air. Start with the French-style gardens and the Italian garden, which give the largest sense of scale, then drift towards the orchid and cactus areas under shade. The site is far bigger than most visitors expect, so decide in advance which sections matter to you.

The cycad collection is the scientific heart of the place; Nong Nooch is known as a centre for cycads and has a gene bank for the group. If you like plants, this is the section to linger over. Dinosaur Valley, opened in 2017, is aimed at children and can be skipped by adults who prefer gardens.

The garden also offers Thai cultural shows and animal shows. Some families like these; others prefer a quiet afternoon of walking. If you have older relatives, split the day: gardens in the morning, a long lunch and then either the show or a rest.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrive at opening time
  • Take a hat, water and sunscreen
  • Check show times when you buy tickets
  • Hire a car and driver; the garden is south of town
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes
