Why it matters
Why Koh Larn is worth your time
Koh Larn is the nearest island to Pattaya, about 7.5 km from the shore, and covers around 5.6 square kilometres. Its eight or so beaches are mostly on the west side, with Tawaen the most visited.
For families it offers a different kind of beach day: clearer water than central Pattaya, space to sit, and a short boat ride that gives children something to do. It is also the place regional water-quality studies rated as fairly good compared with the central Pattaya beach, which is why many hotels recommend it for swimming.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Board an early ferry at Bali Hai pier. The crossing takes about half an hour, and the public boat is cheap. Some boats go to Na Baan pier and others to Tawaen Beach, which is the most visited. Choose the quieter beach if you want to avoid the crowd, such as Samae or Tien, and ask your hotel about transport to them.
Once there, rent a beach chair and umbrella, and keep the swim short. Water sports may be offered at the busiest beach; agree any price in advance.
Plan to leave before the late afternoon wave of returning tour boats. Carry insurance details, water and cash for small purchases. On a rough sea or in September and October, consider postponing; the ride can be unpleasant for older passengers.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Take the morning ferry
- Agree prices before water sports
- Carry cash, water and sun protection
- Check sea conditions and avoid peak monsoon
- Return before the late tour-boat rush
