The short answer
Pattaya Beach and Beach Road: what visitors should know first
Go for a stroll, a sunset and a meal, not for a swim. The beach is narrow and crowded, and regional reports rate its water as poor. Visit in the early evening and use Jomtien or Koh Larn for swimming.
History and context
The story behind Pattaya Beach and Beach Road
A beach restoration scheme, implemented in 2018, brought in 360,000 cubic metres of sand to widen the beach to about 50 metres. Flood damage affected the first 400 metres within a month of completion.

Why it matters
Why Pattaya Beach and Beach Road is worth your time
Pattaya Beach is what many people picture when they think of the city: a long curve of bay with hotels behind it. It was once about 35 metres wide but eroded to just 2 to 3 metres in places, leading to a 429 million baht restoration scheme in 2018 to widen it with sand from Ko Rang Kwian.
Seeing it explains how Pattaya works as a resort: the beach is the frontage, and the real attractions are around it. As a walk, it is easy and gives a clear sense of the city.

How to experience it
Start at the north end near Pattaya Nuea and walk south along Beach Road in the late afternoon. The beach runs for about 2.7 km, and the walk gives you hotels, malls, cafes and sea views. Stop at a cafe for tea or fruit and watch the beach life.
Swimming is not the best idea. A regional environmental office rated the water along central Pattaya beaches as poor, while Naklua, South Pattaya, Koh Larn and Jomtien were rated fairly good. In 2018 a beach restoration project added sand, but erosion and flood damage have been reported since.
Beach Road is also the way to the Bali Hai pier for Koh Larn ferries. At night the southern end merges into the nightlife district; head back towards your hotel before then if you are travelling with elders.
