Pattaya grew from a fishing village into Thailand's best-known beach resort, about 150 km south-east of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. Its reputation is mixed, and it is fair to say so. The city has a well-known nightlife district, but it also has a family-friendly side that most guides underplay: a 6 km sweep of Jomtien Beach, a hilltop Buddha, a botanical garden, ferry trips to Koh Larn and plenty of large hotels with lifts, pools and breakfast buffets.

For an Indian family, Pattaya works best as a three or four day stay after, or instead of, a few days in Bangkok. The road from Bangkok is easy, and the city is compact enough that a baht bus or app taxi covers most of what you want. Temples and gardens are the quieter half of the programme: Wat Phra Yai on Pratumnak Hill, the carved Sanctuary of Truth and the large Wat Yansangwararam complex south of town.

The beach in the middle of the city is a place to walk and eat, not the best place to swim. Water quality along central Pattaya has been rated poor by a regional environmental office, while Jomtien, Naklua and Koh Larn were rated fairly good in the same source. Most families therefore split their beach time between Jomtien and a boat trip.

Vegetarian and Jain food is better than many visitors expect. Pattaya has several Indian restaurants that are vegetarian, and a few Thai vegan cafes, though kitchen standards vary and strict Jain diners should still ask questions. Pick a hotel with a lift and a short walk to the sea, take the middle of the day off, and keep evenings for the promenade rather than the entertainment streets.

Food to try in Pattaya

Pattaya is a seafood-and-Thai city by default, so vegetarian diners need to choose restaurants rather than rely on luck. The most reliable answer is the cluster of vegetarian Indian restaurants around Pattaya Klang Road, including Govindam and Jai Jinendra, and Shree Krishna in the Pattaya Klang area. These serve thalis, dosa and North Indian curries. Zaika on South Pattaya Road is an older halal Indian restaurant that is known for vegetarian dishes but is not vegetarian itself.

For Thai-style vegetarian eating there is a different route. Five Star J on South Pattaya Road is a vegetarian restaurant serving Thai-style dishes, and Thai Jay restaurants (marked by a yellow flag with red lettering) avoid meat, fish sauce and, in traditional versions, garlic and onion. Do not assume a Thai menu is vegetarian: fish sauce, shrimp paste and oyster sauce appear in many dishes. Say 'mai sai nam pla' (no fish sauce) and confirm.

If you are staying at a large hotel, ask the kitchen in advance for a vegetarian or no-onion-no-garlic meal. Strict Jain diners should treat any listing as a starting point and check with the staff, because kitchen practices change and some listings differ on whether egg or dairy is used. Many Indian travellers also carry dry snacks for the day trips.

Shopping in Pattaya

Shopping · 1 guide

Shopping in Pattaya is about malls, night markets and souvenirs, not craft traditions. The Pattaya Floating Market on Sukhumvit Road collects regional crafts, food and souvenirs in one place, while the large malls on Beach Road and Second Road are air-conditioned and easy for older relatives. Prices in tourist areas can be negotiated at markets, less so in malls.

Buy cheap clothes, bags and gifts with some care: compare two or three stalls before you pay, avoid items that look like branded goods sold at a large discount, and keep a note of what you paid in baht. Dried fruit and coconut products are common souvenirs, but check airline rules for liquids and customs limits when you fly home.

Hotels that shape the trip, not just the night.

Choose without overthinking

Which Pattaya experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Koh Larn or Jomtien Beach for a beach day?

Jomtien is the easy option: no boat, long sand and a calmer mood than central Pattaya. Koh Larn has clearer water and a day-trip feel, but needs a ferry or speedboat and some stairs at the pier. Older travellers often prefer Jomtien with a hotel pool nearby.

Sanctuary of Truth or Nong Nooch Garden?

The Sanctuary is a single, wooden, intricately carved building you see in about two hours, with steps and hard hats. Nong Nooch is a day out with gardens, shows and a lot of walking in the sun; take a buggy or shaded route if possible.

Big Buddha hill or Khao Chi Chan?

Wat Phra Yai on Pratumnak Hill is close to the city, gives you the sea view and is quicker. Khao Chi Chan is south and quieter, and works best as a stop on a southern temples-and-garden day.

Pattaya or Phuket?

Pattaya is closer to Bangkok and easy to combine with it. Phuket has more varied beaches and islands but is a flight away. Choose by what you want to add to Bangkok.

Pattaya travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat and rain

Pattaya is warm all year. Monthly mean highs are about 30 to 33 °C and lows about 23 to 27 °C. September and October are the wettest months, so plan indoor options such as malls and temples under cover.

  2. 02

    Getting around

Baht buses (songthaews) run along main roads and normally cost a few tens of baht; board, then pay rather than negotiating a destination. For the south or for comfort, use an app taxi or a car with driver.

  3. 03

    Money

Use baht for small purchases and keep small notes. Always agree taxi prices or ask for the meter, and check exchange rates at licensed counters, not at hotel desks.

  4. 04

    Dress at temples

Cover shoulders and knees at Wat Phra Yai, the Sanctuary of Truth and Wat Yansangwararam, and remove shoes where asked. Carry a light scarf or shirt.

  5. 05

    Beach and sea safety

Swim only where lifeguards or flags are present, and avoid central Pattaya Beach for swimming. Jomtien and Koh Larn are better. Sun, humidity and ice in drinks catch older travellers out; drink bottled water.

  6. 06

    Nightlife areas

Walking Street and parts of Beach Road at night are adult entertainment areas. Families can see the street briefly in the early evening, but the atmosphere changes after dark.

  7. 07

    Food and allergies

Fish sauce, shrimp paste and oyster sauce are common in Thai dishes, even in vegetable dishes. Carry a Thai-language card for no meat, no fish sauce and no egg, or choose a vegetarian Indian restaurant.

  8. 08

    Health cover

Take travel insurance with medical cover. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya runs a 24-hour emergency centre, and larger hotels can call a doctor. Carry your prescriptions in the original packaging.

Pattaya with elderly parents: what to know

  • Pick a hotel with a lift, a pool and a short level walk to the sea or a baht bus stop. Pratumnak and the central beach strip have steep sois that tire older legs.
  • Plan outdoor sights for the first three hours after the sun is up and rest after lunch. Even in the cool months the afternoons are warm and humid.

Day trips from Pattaya

Useful answers

Pattaya FAQs

How many days are enough for Pattaya?

Three days covers Big Buddha, the Sanctuary of Truth, a beach afternoon and one longer excursion such as Koh Larn or Nong Nooch. Four days is relaxed for families.

Is Pattaya suitable for families and senior travellers?

Yes, if you choose your base and pace. Daytime sights, malls, beaches and boat trips are family friendly, while the Walking Street area is an adult entertainment district that most families skip.

Do Indian travellers need a visa for Thailand?

The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi has announced a 30-day tourist visa exemption for Indian passport holders, approved in July 2026. Rules have changed several times recently, so check the Embassy and the official e-visa site before you book.

Can I find vegetarian and Jain food in Pattaya?

Yes. Several vegetarian Indian restaurants operate around Pattaya Klang Road, and Thai Jay restaurants avoid meat and often garlic and onion. Confirm Jain details with the kitchen.

What is the best time to visit Pattaya?

November to February is the driest and most comfortable window. September and October are the wettest months, and April and May are hot.
