Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, lying in the Gulf of Thailand off the south-west coast. It covers about 575 square kilometres and is now a special administrative zone within An Giang province, a status it took in June 2025 after Vietnam's provincial reorganisation. Most visitors come for the beaches, the sunsets on the west coast and a few days of rest.
Beyond the resort strip, the island has more to offer than its reputation suggests. Around 70 percent of it is protected as a national park, pepper vines grow in the north, and Phu Quoc fish sauce is a protected regional product. The southern town of An Thoi has a working fishing harbour, a cable car to Hon Thom island and a former prison that is now a museum.
For Indian families the island is straightforward to reach and easy to move around by car, but food needs planning. Local cooking leans heavily on seafood and fish sauce, and we could not verify any dedicated vegetarian, Jain or Indian restaurants for this guide. Plan on hotel kitchens, and carry some snacks.
The climate decides the trip. The dry season from December to March is calm and sunny; the rainy season from about June to October is wet and the sea can be rough. Pick your dates accordingly, and book early for January and February.
