Before you go
Pokaran with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit between November and February; summer heat is intense.
- The fort and town are flat; go in the morning and rest at midday.
- Avoid the Ramdevra fair days if you tire in crowds.
- Carry water, a hat and any medicines; services are limited.
- Break the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer drive here rather than doing it in one go.
Easiest first
Places in Pokaran sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Pokaran Fort (Balagarh) (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Mostly level courtyards with some steps and uneven floors in older parts. There is shade in the courtyards and the pace is gentle, which suits most older travellers; the heat outside is the main difficulty in summer.
- Pokaran Pottery (Culture and craft · 45 to 90 minutes) — Short walks on level but dusty lanes; seating is informal. Heat and dust are the main issues, so go early and carry water.
- Ram Sarovar and Parcha Bawdi (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — Short level walks, though stepwell edges can be unsafe and there is no seating beyond what pilgrims use. Keep a close watch on older companions near steps and water.
- Ramdevra Temple (Baba Ramdev) (Places of worship · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Mostly flat ground and a long gallery to the shrine. Queues and heat are the main problem; plan for shade, water and seating, and avoid festival days if you tire easily.
