Before you go

Ramanathapuram with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit temples and the palace in the early morning; stone floors get very hot by midday.
  • Use a hired car and driver for the sanctuaries; roads are rural and signage is poor.
  • Carry water, a hat and a folding stool or cushion for the bird tanks, where seating is not published.
  • Check tide timing before Navapashanam; wet steps can be slippery.
  • Confirm sanctuary access and water levels before long drives.
  • Avoid festival days such as Aadi Amavasai and Tiruvathirai if you dislike crowds.

Easiest first

Places in Ramanathapuram sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (9)

  • Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple, Thiruppullani (Places of worship · 1 hour) — Mostly level paving and covered corridors, with a tank to walk around. Seating is limited and the stone floors are hot by midday, so go early and keep moving.
  • Chitrangudi Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours at the tank, plus about 1 hour each way by road) — The visit is mostly standing or strolling on level ground by the tank bund. There is little published about shade, seating or toilets, so plan on sitting in the car between viewing stops and carrying water. Heat is strong from March onward, when the tank may also be dry.
  • Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Memorial, Peikarumbu (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Gardens and display halls are on level ground, with seating in places. The grounds are open to the sun, so go in the morning and keep water with you. Suitable for most older visitors.
  • Kanjirankulam Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours at the tank, plus road time (about 1.5 hours from Ramanathapuram)) — The walking is short and level, but there is little published shade or seating, and the sun is fierce once the morning cools off. Older visitors do best arriving at first light, watching from the car or the bund, and leaving before the heat builds.
  • Melaselvanur-Kilaselvanur Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2 hours at the tank, plus 1 to 1.5 hours each way) — Expect a drive over village roads and short, level walking at the tank edge. Shade and seating are not published, the sun is strong, and the nearest meals and lodgings are in Sayalkudi, Ramanathapuram or Paramakudi. Suitable for older travellers who are happy to watch from the car.
  • Ramalinga Vilasam Palace (Places to visit · 45 to 75 minutes) — The visit is on level ground with short walks between rooms. Lighting is dim in the painted halls and seating is limited, so older visitors should plan to move slowly. The crowded town road outside is the harder part of the trip.
  • Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Close to town, so the car journey is short and there is little walking. Facilities, shade and seating are not published, and the open wetland offers no cover from sun. Older visitors can enjoy it from the car or short stretches of the tank edge in the early morning.
  • Therthangal Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · 1 hour at the tank, plus road time) — The tank is small and the walking is short and level, but there is no published shade, seating or toilet. Village roads can be rough. It suits older visitors who can watch from the car and want a quiet, unhurried stop.
  • Uthirakosamangai Mangalanatha Swamy Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The temple covers about 20 acres with long, mostly level circuits, but you walk barefoot on stone that is hot at midday. Seating is limited. Visit early or at dusk and carry a wet cloth or socks if the temple permits them.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Navapashanam Temple, Devipattinam (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The shrine is reached by a roughly 100-yard pathway that runs into the water, with steps down into the sea. Older visitors may find the wet steps slippery. Go early, wear non-slip sandals, and use the shore view if the tide is high.

Practical tips for Ramanathapuram

  • Heat. From March to September the sun is strong and the coast is humid. Do outdoor visits in the first morning hours and rest at midday.
  • Monsoon. The northeast monsoon from October to December brings the rain that fills the tanks. Roads can be wet and some village routes slow.
  • Getting around. Hire a car with a driver. Buses connect the main towns but the sanctuaries and coast shrines are not easily reached by public transport.
  • Bird sanctuaries. Facilities, fees and timings are not published for the five sanctuaries. Contact the Wildlife Warden, Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, Mandapam, before you go.
  • Temple dress. Dress modestly, remove footwear at temples and avoid photography in sanctums. Carry socks for hot stone floors where allowed.
  • Money. Carry small notes for temple offerings, parking and tea stalls; cards may not work outside town.
  • Tide at Devipattinam. Morning low tide makes the Navapashanam stones accessible; evening high tide may submerge them. Ask locally on the day.
  • Photography. Binoculars matter more than a camera at the tanks. Do not disturb nesting birds or enter the water.
