Sentosa is a small island of about 4.7 square kilometres just off Singapore's south coast, separated from the mainland by Keppel Harbour. Until the 1970s it was a military outpost known as Pulau Blakang Mati; the Sentosa Development Corporation was formed on 1 September 1972, and the island has been a leisure destination ever since. The name is Malay and Sanskrit in origin and is usually translated as peace and tranquillity.

Today it is Singapore's easiest day out for families. Universal Studios Singapore, the Singapore Oceanarium and Adventure Cove Waterpark sit together inside Resorts World Sentosa. Three sheltered beaches, Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong, run along the south coast, and Fort Siloso at the western end gives the island its one serious history lesson. Most things are within a short walk, a free beach shuttle or the Sentosa Express monorail.

It works best as a one- to two-day add-on to Singapore, not a destination in its own right. Many Indian families stay on the mainland and come for a day, because the island is only a short ride from HarbourFront and VivoCity. Staying on the island makes sense if you plan two park days or want mornings on the beach.

The practical challenge is heat and humidity, not distance. Daily highs sit around 31 to 32 degrees all year, and rain can arrive any afternoon. Plan one major attraction per day, rest indoors at midday and keep the beaches and the evening show for later.

Vegetarian eating is the weak spot. We could not verify a dedicated pure-vegetarian, Jain or Indian restaurant on the island, so see the food section for how to manage, and consider eating in Singapore's Little India or at VivoCity on the mainland side.

Sentosa's restaurants are mostly in Resorts World Sentosa, hotels and beach venues, and they lean towards Asian, seafood and international menus. We could not verify any pure-vegetarian, Jain or vegan-only restaurant on the island from sources we could open, so none carries those tags here; Indian restaurants such as Royal Taj and SHAAN serve vegetarian dishes on mixed menus.

In practice, vegetarian families should plan to ask. Most kitchens will prepare vegetable and noodle dishes, but do not assume that the stock or sauces are meat-free, and make clear that you avoid meat, fish and egg. Jain diners should ask about onion, garlic and root vegetables for every dish. If you are staying at a hotel or resort, talk to the kitchen ahead and ask about Indian vegetarian or Jain meals.

The simplest solution is to eat before or after your Sentosa visit on the mainland. Little India in Singapore has long-established vegetarian restaurants, and food courts near HarbourFront and VivoCity have a wide choice; check each venue on the day.

Shopping in Sentosa

Shopping

Shopping on Sentosa is mostly souvenirs and theme-park merchandise. The shops at Resorts World Sentosa and inside the attractions sell branded items, and you will find beach goods and gifts near the beaches. For anything else, use VivoCity at the mainland end of the Sentosa Express.

If you want local gifts, buy them in Singapore proper rather than on the island. Prices on Sentosa tend to reflect the visitor setting, so compare before you buy, and check India's customs allowance before purchasing electronics or high-value items.

Choose without overthinking

Which Sentosa experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Universal Studios Singapore or the Singapore Oceanarium?

Universal Studios suits families with older children and teenagers who want rides, and it takes a full day. The Oceanarium is indoors, calmer and shorter, and it suits grandparents. If you can do only one, choose by the youngest and oldest members of the group.

Adventure Cove Waterpark or the beaches?

Adventure Cove gives you slides and a lazy river but costs a ticket and needs swimwear. The beaches are generally open to the public and can be enjoyed fully dressed, though without the rides.

Siloso, Palawan or Tanjong Beach?

Siloso is livelier and sporty. Palawan is the family choice with its suspension bridge. Tanjong is the quietest. Pick by the mood you want.

Stay on Sentosa or on the mainland?

Staying on the island saves travel and suits two park days. The mainland side gives more food choice, including Indian vegetarian, and often lower prices.

    Heat and humidity

Highs are around 31 to 32 degrees all year. Do outdoor sights early or late, carry water and rest indoors at midday.

  2. 02

    Rain

Showers can arrive suddenly, most often in the afternoon and during the northeast monsoon from mid-November. Pack a light rain jacket and have an indoor option.

  3. 03

Indian passport holders generally need a visa for Singapore and must submit an SG Arrival Card, usually within three days before arrival. Check the ICA site.

  4. 04

    Getting there

From HarbourFront, take the Sentosa Express from VivoCity or walk the Boardwalk. Buses, taxis and the cable car also run.

  5. 05

    Getting around

Use the free beach shuttle between Palawan, Siloso and Tanjong. It saves long walks on sand.

  6. 06

    Dress and swimming

Wear light cotton and a hat for the day. If you swim, use patrolled beaches and follow lifeguard notices; check conditions after any incident such as the 2024 oil spill.

  7. 07

    Food planning

Dedicated Indian vegetarian restaurants are not verified on the island. Plan meals at VivoCity or Little India, or arrange meals with your hotel in advance.

  8. 08

    Book ahead

Buy dated tickets for Universal Studios and the Oceanarium ahead, and confirm ride closures and show times on the day.

Sentosa with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one major attraction a day and rest indoors at midday, as the heat and humidity are constant.
  • Use the Sentosa Express, free beach shuttle and covered walkways instead of long walks between zones.

Useful answers

Sentosa FAQs

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Singapore?

Generally yes. Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority lists India among the countries whose travel document holders need a visa, though transit may be possible. You must also submit an SG Arrival Card, usually within three days before you arrive. Check the ICA site before you book.

How do I get to Sentosa?

From HarbourFront MRT, walk to VivoCity and take the Sentosa Express to Beach Station, or use the Boardwalk, buses, a taxi or the cable car. Check which route suits your attraction.

Is there vegetarian or Jain food on Sentosa?

We could not verify a dedicated vegetarian, Jain or Indian restaurant on the island. Most kitchens can prepare vegetable dishes if asked, and the mainland side has more choice.

How many days do we need?

One day is enough for a single park and a beach; two days suits a family adding a second attraction or Fort Siloso.

Is Sentosa suitable for older parents?

Yes with planning. Many attractions are indoors and level, but sun and humidity are constant, so rest at midday and avoid long walks.
