Plan 01

1 day in Sivasagar

  1. 01

Day 1: The tank, the pavilion and the palace

Start at the Sivasagar tank and the Sivadol while the light is soft and the temples are quiet. Drive a few kilometres to the Rang Ghar for the boat-shaped roof, then to Talatal Ghar at Rangpur for the palace ruins. Have a long lunch of Assamese thali and rest through the warm hours. In the late afternoon, visit Joysagar tank and the Joy Dol, then stop at the Fakuwa Dol and Ranganath Doul if you have energy.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Rang GharAbout 45 minutesEasyMorning or late afternoon; October to March
Talatal GharAbout 1 to 1.5 hoursModerateMorning; October to March, avoiding wet weather when ground is slippery

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Talatal Ghar: Paths are mostly level, but staircases inside are steep and dim, and the stone and brick are uneven. Seniors can enjoy the exterior and lower corridors without climbing to the upper floors.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Sivasagar trip for parents and children

  • Plan only two or three sights a day and leave the afternoon free. Heat and humidity are tiring, even in winter.
  • Rang Ghar, the Sivasagar tank and Joysagar are largely level. Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar have steep interior stairs, so enjoy the exteriors if needed.
  • Hire a car and driver for the district; sights are spread over 3 to 30 km and public transport is limited.
  • Carry water, a hat and a torch. Shade is limited, and interior corridors can be dim.
  • Visit between October and March; the monsoon brings heavy rain and slippery paths.
  • At working temples, expect shoes off and modest dress; carry socks for hot or cold floors.
