The short answer
Mandvi Gate: what visitors should know first
Go for a short look and some market atmosphere. It is a brief stop, best combined with the old city and Sursagar Lake, and crowded in the evening and during festivals.
History and context
The story behind Mandvi Gate
The fort of Kila-e-Daulatabad was built in 1511 by Khalil Khan, sultan of Gujarat, and Mandvi stands at its centre where two main streets meet. It was first a two-storey pavilion. In 1736 the governor Malharao Maloji renovated it on the orders of Damaji Rao II, and in 1856 Ganpatrao Gaekwad added two upper storeys and a clock.
Later changes moved the staircase tower and replaced wooden upper storeys with concrete. Roughly 90 percent of the fort walls have eroded.

Why it matters
Why Mandvi Gate is worth your time
Mandvi Gate is the clearest surviving piece of the walled city that once stood at the heart of Vadodara. Most of the fort walls have eroded, but the pavilion remains as a marker of how the old town was organised around two main streets meeting at its centre.
It also shows several layers of history in one structure: a sultanate-era pavilion, a Maratha renovation and Gaekwad-era additions. That layering is a good introduction to why Vadodara's history is not just the Gaekwad story.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat Mandvi as a short heritage stop in the middle of the old city. The pavilion is square, with three arched openings on each side and decorative niches. A clock was added at the top in the nineteenth century, and the original wooden lattice work is still visible in places.
Walk around the base and look at the arches, then step back to see the proportions. The markets that surround it are part of the experience, and you may find fafda-jalebi shops and snack stalls nearby. Mandvi is considered a good area for street food, though choose busy stalls and keep stomach sensitivities in mind.
Pair Mandvi with Nyay Mandir and Sursagar Lake, which are close by, for a morning on foot or by e-rickshaw.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Visit in the morning for fewer crowds
