Vadodara, often still called Baroda, is a city shaped by one ruling family. The Gaekwads governed Baroda State, and Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III used his long reign to build public institutions: a large garden, a museum, courts, a palace and a memorial that survive in daily use. The result is a city where heritage sits in ordinary streets, not behind a single fort wall.
The old name Chandanavati and the traditional link between Vadodara and the banyan tree show that settlement here goes back well before the Gaekwads. At the centre of the old town, Mandvi Gate still stands as a remnant of the fort built by the Gujarat sultans in 1511, with later Maratha and Gaekwad layers added on top. Walk from there to Sursagar Lake and the Indo-Saracenic Nyay Mandir and you cover several centuries in a short stretch.
For families and older travellers, Vadodara is easier than many heritage cities. Sayaji Baug gives shade, a zoo, a planetarium and the Baroda Museum in one place. The big palace and museum estate is level and spacious. The city is flat, mostly vegetarian-friendly and has a good choice of sit-down food. The main thing to plan around is heat: April to June is hard going and July and August bring heavy rain.
Two outstanding day trips sit within reach by road. Champaner-Pavagadh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 50 km east, and the Statue of Unity at Kevadia is about 100 km south-east. Both are best done with a car and driver on a separate day.
