The short answer
Nyay Mandir: what visitors should know first
A short stop rather than a destination. Look at the facade and the clock, then move on. Interior access depends on current use, so do not plan around going inside.
History and context
The story behind Nyay Mandir
The building opened on 30 November 1896, designed by Robert Chisholm, the state architect of Baroda. It was first planned as the Maharani Chimnabai Market, a vegetable market, and later served as a town hall before becoming a court. It was named after Sayajirao's late wife, Chimnabai I.
The cost at construction is recorded as about 7.44 lakh rupees. The building has been used as the Vadodara city district court.

Why it matters
Why Nyay Mandir is worth your time
Nyay Mandir is one of the best examples of Robert Chisholm's work in Vadodara, and it shows the Indo-Saracenic style that Sayajirao Gaekwad III preferred for public buildings. Its story is also unusual: it started as a vegetable market and became a civic building, then a court.
It is named after Chimnabai I, the Maharaja's wife, and the name Nyay Mandir means Temple of Justice. For visitors, it is a good reminder that Vadodara's public architecture was part of a deliberate plan, not just a palace.

How to experience it
The easiest way to see Nyay Mandir is from the pavement across the road in the morning, when the facade is not in direct sun. Look for the clock at the front and the way the building is symmetrical, with arches, turrets and a pitched roof that borrow from different traditions.
If the interior is accessible, look for the central hall, which is described as about 115 by 86 feet with galleries on both sides and mosaic decoration. A white marble statue of Chimnabai I stands in the main room. Do not expect an organised museum visit, because the building has been used for legal and administrative work.
The stop pairs well with Sursagar Lake, which is a few minutes away, and with the old city markets around Mandvi if you want a longer walk.
