The short answer
Sursagar Lake: what visitors should know first
Yes, for an easy evening stop. It is not a deep sightseeing destination, but it is central, free to see and pairs well with Nyay Mandir and Mandvi.
History and context
The story behind Sursagar Lake
The lake is said to have been rebuilt with stone masonry in the eighteenth century. The statue of Sarveshwar Mahadev, 111 feet tall, was built from 1996 to 2002 on 23 pilings driven 78 feet deep. A gilding project was carried out by a local foundation and the statue was dedicated to the city on Mahashivratri in 2023.
In 1993 a boating accident on the lake killed 22 people, and boating resumed later after a long gap.

Why it matters
Why Sursagar Lake is worth your time
Sursagar, also known as Chand Talao, sits in the middle of Vadodara and works as the city's front room: people meet here, walk here and watch festivals here. The lake was rebuilt in stone in the eighteenth century according to available accounts.
The Shiva statue, built between 1996 and 2002, made the lake a landmark. It was one of the tallest Shiva statues in India when it was inaugurated, and in 2023 it was dedicated to the city on Mahashivratri after gilding work.

How to experience it
Go in the late afternoon and walk along the edge as the light softens. The lake is surrounded by a concrete wall where people sit, and the Shiva statue stands in the middle, 111 feet tall and partly gilded. Look from different sides to see how the statue changes against the sky.
As the sun goes down, the lake gets busier and the old-city buildings behind it begin to light up. This is a good place to sit for twenty minutes rather than rush. If you want a snack, the old city around Mandvi is a short ride away.
Boating has been available at times, but arrangements change, and it is worth asking locally rather than planning around it. Combine the lake with Nyay Mandir on foot, or end a day in the old city here.
