The short answer

Sayaji Baug: what visitors should know first

Yes for families and anyone who wants shade and a long, gentle walk. It is the easiest place to take children and parents in the same afternoon, but go early or late in the day in summer.

History and context

The story behind Sayaji Baug

The garden, about 113 acres, was dedicated to the citizens of Vadodara in 1879 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Over time it gained a zoo, an aquarium added in 1962, a planetarium, a floral clock and the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery.

The garden also has bronze statues of the Koli brothers Arjan and Hari, who are said to have saved the Maharaja from a lion.

Why it matters

Why Sayaji Baug is worth your time

Sayaji Baug was laid out by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and dedicated to the citizens of Vadodara in 1879. It was meant as a public space rather than a royal garden, a rare idea for its time, and it still works that way: families, joggers and school groups all share it.

The garden also gathers most of the city's family attractions in one place, so it is the practical heart of a day with children.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Floral clock

A 20-foot dial with underground machinery, a simple but popular stop.

  2. 02

    Planetarium

A pyramid-shaped hall that holds about 200 people, with shows in several languages.

  3. 03

    The museum and zoo

The museum is inside the garden and the zoo has Asiatic lions and a bird section.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan Sayaji Baug around two anchors rather than every attraction. A walk through the shaded paths in the morning, a stop at the floral clock and then the Baroda Museum is a comfortable half-day. Families with children can add the zoo, aquarium and Joy Train, a roughly 20-minute ride that replaced the old toy train.

The planetarium is a pyramid-shaped hall seating about 200, with show timings in Gujarati, English and Hindi through the late afternoon. Check the day's schedule at the gate because shows are not held on Thursdays. If you are travelling with older relatives, choose the museum and planetarium over the zoo, which involves more walking.

In summer, arrive when gates open and leave by late morning. In winter you can stay longer, then rest before an evening at Sursagar or the old city.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early in summer and avoid midday
  • Check Thursday closures for the train and planetarium
  • Pick two attractions, not all of them
  • Carry water and a hat
