Area by area

Ziro neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Hapoli (New Ziro)

Best for: Travellers who want shops, cars, ATMs and a few small hotels close by

Good to know: The commercial centre of the valley. It is the easiest base for logistics and for finding a driver, with a market and basic eateries nearby. Noise and traffic are modest, and most sights are a short drive away.

Sights in this area: Apatani rice-fish fields, Siikhe Lake, Tarin Fish Farm

  2. 02

Old Ziro villages (Hong, Hari and neighbours)

Best for: Culture-minded visitors who want to wake up among the rice fields

Good to know: Homestays here let you eat Apatani food and walk straight into the paddy lanes. Expect simple rooms, shared bathrooms in some places and limited English, so confirm facilities before booking.

  3. 03

Lakeside and ridge edges (near Siikhe Lake and the pine ridges)

Best for: Birdwatchers, photographers and anyone who prefers quiet

Good to know: A calmer setting with a few resorts and guesthouses. Evenings are cold and distances to shops and eateries are longer, so check transport back to Hapoli.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
