Before you go
Ziro with elderly parents: what to know
- Allow a full day for the road in. The route from Itanagar or Assam is winding and can be slowed by rain and landslides, so do not schedule a tight connection on the day you leave.
- Carry warm layers even in spring and autumn. Evenings at this altitude are cool, and winter nights can be cold.
- Choose accommodation with a heater or hot water bucket and ask about steps, bathrooms and the distance to the car.
- Walk the paddy lanes slowly. The bunds are narrow and slippery when wet, so wear shoes with good grip and consider a stick.
- Treat Kile Pakho, Dolo Mando and the Talley Valley trails as optional. The valley's main pleasures need only short, level walks.
- Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit. Hospital facilities in Hapoli are limited compared with Itanagar or Guwahati.
Easiest first
Places in Ziro sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (7)
- Apatani food (Food and restaurants · One meal; allow 1-2 hours) — Meals are usually eaten sitting, often on low seats or floors at homestays. Ask for a chair if needed. Food is mild to spicy and often smoky.
- Apatani rice-fish fields (Places to visit · 1-3 hours) — The bunds are narrow, slippery after rain and uneven. Paths are flat and level in general, but there is little seating or shade, so take a stick if you need one and keep to the main lanes.
- Hapoli market (Shopping · 45 minutes-1.5 hours) — Mostly flat in the town area, with crowds and traffic at busy times and limited seating. A manageable outing for older travellers with a companion.
- Pine Grove (Myolyang) (Places to visit · 45 minutes-1.5 hours) — Mostly easy walking on soft ground, with some uneven patches and limited seating. It is a good option for older travellers who want a calm outdoor stop.
- Siddheswar Nath Temple (Places of worship · 30-60 minutes) — The visit is short and mostly level, with steps near the shrine. Older visitors can usually manage it with a car close by, but seating is limited at busy times.
- Siikhe Lake (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — Flat and easy, with limited shade and seating. A good outing for older travellers who want to be outdoors without climbing.
- Tarin Fish Farm (Places to visit · 1-1.5 hours) — The walk from the road is mostly level but can be muddy, and seating and shade are limited. A car to the nearest point reduces the walk for older travellers.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Dolo Mando (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — The path is a climb on uneven ground with little seating, but it is shorter than Kile Pakho. Older travellers can enjoy the lower slopes and the road views.
- Hong village (Places to visit · 1.5-2.5 hours) — Lanes are uneven and sometimes muddy and there is little seating. Older visitors can do a short loop with a guide and see the main street from the car; houses are not generally wheelchair friendly.
- Kile Pakho (Places to visit · 1.5-3 hours including the drive) — The final stretch is a climb on uneven ground with little seating. Older travellers can enjoy the drive and the lower viewpoints, then decide whether to go higher.
- Ziro Festival of Music (Culture and craft · Four days; one day if you only want to sample) — Festival sites are outdoors, with uneven ground, crowds and late nights. They are less suited to travellers who need calm, level paths and early nights.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half to full day) — Roads are long and winding, and trails are uneven. The orchid trail is short and easier, but deeper treks are demanding and not suited to those with limited mobility.

Practical tips for Ziro
- Permits. Indian visitors who are not residents of Arunachal Pradesh need an Inner Line Permit. Apply for the electronic permit on the state's official portal before you travel and carry a copy plus photo ID. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead. Rules and fees can change, so confirm on the official portal.
- Cold and altitude. The plateau sits at roughly 1,500 metres or more. Evenings are cool even in spring and autumn, and winter nights can be cold. Pack layers, a rain jacket and warm socks.
- Getting around. Hire a local car and driver from Hapoli. Public transport between sights is limited, and some roads are narrow and winding.
- Walking. Paddy-field bunds are narrow and slippery after rain. Wear shoes with good grip and walk single file. Ridge climbs such as Kile Pakho are optional.
- Money. Carry enough cash before leaving Itanagar or Hapoli. Card and UPI acceptance is patchy in villages and homestays, and mobile networks can be unreliable.
- Dress and respect. Dress modestly in villages and at temples. Ask before photographing people, especially elders, and do not enter a house without invitation.
- Rain and closures. From June to August, heavy rain can trigger landslides and delay road journeys. Keep a buffer day and check road status before moving between districts.
- Food and water. Tell your host in advance about vegetarian or dietary needs. Drink bottled or boiled water, and be careful with homemade drinks if you are unsure of the strength.
