Before you go

Ajman with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one outing in the morning and one after sunset; between May and September, midday heat is hard on older travellers.
  • The Ajman Museum is air-conditioned in parts and mostly level, but floors in the old fort can be uneven; wear flat, grippy shoes.
  • Use taxis between sights, and keep the hotel's address in Arabic and English on your phone.
  • Carry travel insurance and a medication list. Check where the nearest hospital is, and note that Thumbay Medicity is a large private hospital campus in Al Jurf.
  • Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees in public places, and carry a light scarf for mosques and cold air-conditioned rooms.
  • Ask your hotel to arrange plain vegetarian or Jain-style meals in advance, as few restaurants cater to Jain diets.

Easiest first

Places in Ajman sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (20)

  • Ajman Corniche (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Flat paving with benches and cafes nearby. There is little shade at midday and in summer, so go in the evening. Taxis can drop you at several points along the promenade.
  • Ajman Museum (Ajman Fort) (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — Mostly level and partly air-conditioned, with a central courtyard for sitting. Some floors in the old fort are uneven and doorways are low, so wear flat shoes. There is parking near the entrance.
  • Al Kubain Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes) — Layout and seating are unverified. Ask about steps and parking when you call, and take a taxi.
  • Bikaner Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes) — A casual restaurant in a commercial district. Layout, steps and seating are unverified, so ask when you call and arrange a taxi to the door.
  • Bukhara at Ajman Hotel (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Hotel restaurants usually offer level access, lifts and table service, but we did not verify this venue, so ask the hotel about step-free access and quiet seating.
  • Cafe Naseem (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A hotel dining room normally means seated service and level floors, but we did not verify lifts or step-free routes. Buffet queues can be long, so ask staff for help carrying plates.
  • Dakshin Pure Veg Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — A casual restaurant in a commercial district. We could not verify steps, seating or parking, so ask when you call, and request a ground-level table for older relatives.
  • Desi Vibes Pure Veg Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — A restaurant in a residential district. Ask about stairs, seating and parking when you call, as we could not verify the layout.
  • Gioia Italian Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Likely seated, air-conditioned dining, but we did not verify steps or lifts. Ask when booking if mobility is a concern.
  • India House Veg Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Casual restaurant in a residential and commercial area. We could not verify steps, seating or lift access, so ask when you call and request a ground-level table for older relatives.
  • King's Grill at Ramada Beach Hotel (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A hotel setting normally means seated service and level access, but we did not verify lifts or steps at this venue, so ask the hotel before you book.
  • Padayappa Food Court Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — A restaurant in a residential and commercial area. We could not verify stairs, seating or parking, so ask when you call.
  • Pumpkins Health Food Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes) — Layout is unverified. Light dishes suit softer diets, but ask about steps and seating when you call.
  • Sasya Pure Veg Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Listed inside a hypermarket, which usually means lifts and level floors, but confirm. Parking is likely easier than at street-front restaurants.
  • Seascape Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — It is a hotel restaurant, so seated service and indoor air conditioning are likely, but we did not verify lifts, steps or table height. Ask the hotel about step-free access if anyone uses a stick or wheelchair.
  • Sultan Saray (Food and restaurants · 1 hour) — We could not verify seating, steps or noise levels. Ask about a ground-level table, and choose off-peak hours if crowds tire older relatives.
  • Themar Al Bahar (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — We could not verify steps, seating or lift access. Ask for a ground-level table, and note that waterfront areas can be warm and breezy, so choose evening.
  • Veg Corner (Thumbay Medicity) (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Inside a large hospital campus, so usually level and air-conditioned, with parking and lifts; confirm before you travel.
  • VegMe Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 30 to 45 minutes) — A casual restaurant. Steps and seating are unverified at both branches, so ask by phone, and choose the branch nearer your hotel.
  • Zanzi Bar (Food and restaurants · 1 to 2 hours) — Seating is indoor and outdoor, so the heat can be avoided inside. We did not verify steps or beach access, so ask for a table with a flat route from the entrance.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Al Zorah Nature Reserve (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Flat ground, but little shade and long distances between points; arrange a car or guided access. Bring water and a hat, and avoid midday and summer.
  • Gold Souq and Souk Saleh (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — Level, mostly covered lanes in places, but busy and warm. Take breaks in cafes, and avoid the midday heat.
  • Masfout Village and Wadi Hadf (Places to visit · Full day including the drive) — Flat in the village and park, but there is a long drive each way and few facilities. Seniors who dislike long car rides may prefer to stay on the coast.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Masfout Fort (Places to visit · 45 minutes at the fort; a full day with the drive) — The fort sits on craggy ground above the village, so expect a climb, uneven surfaces and wind. It is not recommended for anyone with knee, balance or heart problems unless you see it from below.

Practical tips for Ajman

  • Heat. From May to September daytime highs are above 40 C. Do outdoor sights before 10 am or after sunset and use the museum as a midday refuge.
  • Getting around. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical choice. The old centre is walkable only in cool weather; Al Zorah and Masfout need a car.
  • Dress. Dress modestly in public places, with shoulders and knees covered. Beachwear belongs on the beach or at the hotel pool.
  • Alcohol. Do not assume alcohol is served or allowed. Check your hotel and the current rules, and do not bring any without checking.
  • Money. The UAE dirham is the local currency. Cards are widely accepted, but carry small notes for souks and taxis, and check current exchange rates.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing people, especially women, and avoid photographing government buildings or security staff.
  • Opening days. Friday hours often start later in the day. Confirm museum and restaurant times before you go.
  • Medical. Carry travel insurance and your regular medicines in original packaging. Check the nearest hospital before you travel and note any medicine rules.
