Area by area

Nagarhole neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Hunsur and the northern boundary

Best for: Travellers using the Veeranahosahalli gate or coming up from Mysuru

Good to know: Hunsur is a convenient town and the highway gateway. Lodges near the gate cut the early drive, while Hunsur offers more choice and services. Check distances to the gate and meals before booking.

  2. 02

    South Kodagu (Kutta, Virajpet, Gonikoppal)

Best for: Travellers combining Coorg, Irpu Falls and the Nanachi gate

Good to know: Homestays and estate stays place you close to Irpu and the Kodagu-side entrance. Roads are winding, so allow extra travel time on safari mornings.

Sights in this area: Irpu Falls (Lakshmana Tirtha Falls)

  3. 03

    Kabini side (Antharasante, Karapura)

Best for: Travellers who want the reservoir and a lodge package

Good to know: This southern area has its own Raahzo guide. It suits those who prefer all-inclusive lodges and boat safaris, but it is a different side of the park from the gates covered here.

  4. 04

    Mysuru

Best for: Older travellers who prefer a city base and day trips

Good to know: Roughly a two-hour drive each way makes early safaris tiring, but Mysuru has hospitals, easy flights and trains and a wide choice of hotels.

Sights in this area: Birds and Butterflies of Nagarhole, Veeranahosahalli Gate Safari

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
