Before you go
Nagarhole with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose slots when you are rested: the morning drive starts in the dark and can be cold, so carry a shawl or light jacket even in warm months.
- Safari vehicles have hard seats and bumpy tracks. Bring a small cushion and sit towards the front or near a window if you are prone to motion sickness.
- Irpu Falls involves steps and a forest path that is slippery when wet. Older visitors can stop at the lower viewpoints and the temple.
- Confirm booking, timing and vehicle type with the Forest Department before you travel; safaris can be cancelled at short notice in bad weather.
- Stay overnight rather than doing a 10-hour round trip from Bengaluru. Travel in daylight, as elephants cross roads near the forest.
- Carry regular medicines, water and snacks; facilities near the gates are limited.
Easiest first
Places in Nagarhole sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Birds and Butterflies of Nagarhole (Places to visit · A safari slot of 2 to 3 hours, or a longer guided walk if the lodge arranges one) — Mostly seated in vehicles, with only short stops. Binoculars reduce the need to approach. Early starts are cold in winter, and bumpy tracks can tire the back.
- Lakshmanatirtha River (Places to visit · Depends on the stretch: 15 minutes at Hunsur, a morning at Irpu) — Viewing from bridges or from a safari vehicle is easy and seated. Walking along banks, especially near Irpu, can be slippery and uneven. Hunsur's bridge views are level and short.
- Nanachi Gate Safari (Places to visit · About 3 hours per safari, plus travel from your Coorg base) — Seated throughout, with no walking inside the park. The approach roads through Kodagu are winding, which can bother people prone to motion sickness. Starts are early and seats can be hard, so bring a cushion and a light jacket.
- Rameshwara Temple, Irpu (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — Mostly level approach and a short walk. Floors can be wet near the river, so shoes with grip help before you remove them. There is little shade or seating, so take breaks nearby.
- Taraka Reservoir (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours if access is arranged) — Viewing is from vehicles or short, level bank paths. Shade and benches are limited, and dry-season afternoons are hot. Mornings are far more comfortable.
- Veeranahosahalli Gate Safari (Places to visit · About 3 hours per safari, plus the approach and check-in) — No walking on the safari itself, but forest tracks are bumpy, seats in the larger vehicles are hard and the early start means a cold, dark drive. Carry a shawl in winter, a cushion if your back is sensitive, and water. Toilets are limited once you are inside.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Irpu Falls (Lakshmana Tirtha Falls) (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the walk and a rest) — The approach involves a walk on a forest path with steps, which can be slippery when wet. Handrails and benches are not guaranteed. Older visitors may prefer to stop at the lower stretch and temple, wear shoes with grip and carry an umbrella.

Practical tips for Nagarhole
- Booking. Booking channels and slot status have changed, with online booking reported closed at times and counter tickets available. Confirm with the Karnataka Forest Department before you travel.
- Arrival. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your slot and carry a valid photo ID, as the department has advised.
- Cold mornings. Winter dawns can be cold, especially in an open vehicle. Carry a jacket, scarf and, if needed, gloves.
- Rain. In heavy monsoon weeks, safaris and tracks can be cancelled and roads in Kodagu can be slippery. Keep a flexible plan.
- Elephants on roads. Drive in daylight where possible. Elephants cross roads near the forest, so slow down and give them space.
- Photography. Camera fees may apply, and rules on flash, noise and leaving the vehicle should be followed strictly.
- Irpu Falls. Wear shoes with grip, avoid wading in fast water and confirm access and fees locally.
- Cash and signal. Network signal can be weak near the forest. Keep some cash and download maps and booking confirmations in advance.
