Before you go

Roing with elderly parents: what to know

  • Hire a car and driver; the main sights are 3 to 56 km apart on mountain roads.
  • Choose the cool months, October to March, and avoid the heavy rains from May to September.
  • Carry your Inner Line Permit and a copy of your medicines; hospitals are limited.
  • Keep Mayodia for a settled-weather day and leave early.
  • Skip the long Mehao trek and visit the lake approaches instead.
  • Carry water and snacks on every outing; facilities are sparse.

Easiest first

Places in Roing sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Mayodia Pass (Places to visit · Full day) — The pass is reached by vehicle and the walking is short, but the drive is long on winding mountain roads. It is cold at height and the road can be slippery; older travellers should only go in settled weather.
  • RIWATCH Ethnographic Museum (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours) — An indoor, mostly level visit that suits older travellers well. Seating and toilet facilities on the campus are not documented, so confirm in advance.
  • Sally Lake (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The lake is close to the road and mostly level, so older visitors can enjoy it with a short walk. Seating and shade are informal, and paths can be damp and muddy after rain.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Bhismaknagar Fort (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours on site, plus the drive) — Paths across the ruins are uneven and partly overgrown, with no handrails and little seating or shade. Walking the full rampart line is demanding; seniors can see the main gateway and wall sections near the road and skip the rest.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half day to full day; the long trek takes 4 to 7 hours) — Most useful trails are on foot and can be steep and slippery, with no seating and few facilities. Older visitors should confine themselves to the lake's lower approaches and not attempt the long trek.
