Before you go
Tezpur with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose a hotel with a lift or ground-floor rooms and easy car access; central streets can be busy and uneven.
- Keep Bhairabi Temple and Mahabhairab for a cool morning and ask about the staircase and vehicle access first; skip them if the climb is too much.
- Cole Park, Padum Pukhuri and Ganeshghat are the easiest stops: largely level, with seating and short walks.
- Avoid April to September if you can; heavy humidity and rain make walking tiring and roads slow.
- Take a car and driver for the day, as the western ruins and temples are spread out and not well signed.
- For Nameri, choose a gentle raft trip or a short guided walk, and start early, because the road is bumpy.
Easiest first
Places in Tezpur sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (7)
- Chitralekha Udyan (Cole Park) (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Paths are mostly level and there are places to sit by the lake. Shade is patchy, so avoid midday in the warmer months, and check that any boating you want is running.
- Da Parbatia Ruins (Culture and craft · 30 to 45 minutes) — A short walk on largely level ground within a small, quiet site. There is not much shade or seating, so a visit in the cooler months or early morning is best.
- Ganeshghat Riverfront (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — The ground by the river can be uneven and the approach has some steps. Choose a spot near the road where you can sit, and avoid wet, muddy edges in the monsoon.
- Haleswar Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — A short walk from the road on mostly level ground, with the usual need to remove footwear. Shade and seating are limited, so avoid the hot midday hours.
- Kolia Bhomora Setu (Places to visit · 15 to 30 minutes) — Best seen from the car or from the riverbank at a safe spot. The bridge carries heavy traffic, so do not plan to walk it.
- Padum Pukhuri (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Level walkways and plenty of places to sit. It gets crowded on weekend evenings and holidays, which can make the paths slow but not difficult.
- Tezpur Colonial Quarter Walk (Culture and craft · 1 hour) — Mostly flat town streets, with traffic and uneven pavements. Take a driver for the longer hops between buildings and choose cooler hours.
Some walking — plan a break (6)
- Agnigarh Hill (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The park climbs a hillock by paths and stairways, including a circular stairway towards the crest. Older visitors can enjoy the lower sculptures and benches without going to the top, but there is little shade in the middle of the day.
- Bamuni Hills (Culture and craft · 45 to 60 minutes) — A walkway runs through the site, but the ground is uneven with scattered stone and little shade. Take your time and wear shoes with grip.
- Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half to full day) — There are few visitor facilities, tracks can be rough and dusty, and the nearest comfortable lodging is in Tezpur. Suitable for older visitors who can manage long, bumpy vehicle rides, not for those needing toilets and seating at every stop.
- Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half to full day) — Visitor facilities are limited and tracks are rough. The ride is long and bumpy with little shade, so it suits older visitors who are comfortable in a vehicle for several hours but not those who need frequent rest stops.
- Mahabhairab Temple (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — The temple stands on a hillock, so there is a climb, and footwear is left outside, which means walking barefoot on stone that gets hot in the sun. Choose an early or late visit and ask about vehicle access before you go.
- Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day) — Facilities are limited and forest roads are rough. Long vehicle days, uneven ground and little seating make it demanding for frail travellers; Nameri is a gentler alternative.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Bhairabi Temple (Places of worship · 45 to 75 minutes) — Visitors climb a long staircase from the approach road, which is tiring in heat. Older or less mobile travellers may prefer to see the site from below, or pair it with the lower-effort Bamuni Hills.

Practical tips for Tezpur
- Climate. November to February is dry and pleasant. From April the humidity rises, and May to September brings very heavy rain and flooding risk on rivers. Plan outdoor sights for mornings in any season.
- Getting there. Guwahati is the main gateway, about 180 to 200 km by road, taking about four hours. Tezpur Airport is run by the Indian Air Force, so confirm current scheduled flights before relying on it.
- Getting around. A car with a driver is the easiest way to link Da Parbatia, Bamuni Hills, Bhairabi and the northern temples. Autos and local taxis work inside town; agree the fare first.
- Temples. Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees and expect to remove footwear. Bhairabi Temple has a long staircase, and animal offerings are reported there, so ask locally if that matters to you.
- Shivaratri. Mahabhairab holds a fair during Shivaratri week and gets very crowded. Visit on an ordinary day if you prefer a quiet experience.
- Money. Carry cash for small shops, temple offerings and autos, and check in advance that ATMs near your hotel are working. Card acceptance is patchy outside larger hotels.
- Security and photography. The air force base means military areas and checkpoints. Do not photograph military installations, and carry photo ID. Ask permission before photographing worshippers.
- Nameri visits. Start early for Nameri, bring binoculars, wear muted colours and expect leeches in wet months. Confirm permits, fees and the road condition with Assam Tourism or the forest office.
