Plan 01

1 day in Genting Highlands

  1. 01

Day 1: Cable car, temple and SkyAvenue

Take a coach or car from Kuala Lumpur to Sky Sentral and, if shopping matters, spend an hour at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets first. Ride the Awana SkyWay and get off at Chin Swee station to visit Chin Swee Caves Temple, then eat at the vegetarian restaurant in its lobby. Re-board to SkyAvenue, rest indoors through the wet afternoon, and see Genting SkyWorlds or Skytropolis if you travel with children. Leave before dark if you are returning to Kuala Lumpur by road.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
SkyAvenue1 to 3 hoursEasyAny time; useful for rainy afternoons
Genting Highlands Premium Outlets1.5 to 3 hoursModerateMorning, before the crowds and afternoon rain
Awana SkyWayAbout 15 to 30 minutes each way, plus queueingEasyMorning on a clear day; weekends and holidays have long queues
Chin Swee Caves Temple1.5 to 2.5 hours, longer with a mealDemandingMorning, before cloud and the afternoon crowd; Lunar New Year is busy

Pace: Chin Swee Caves Temple involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets: The centre is open-air and laid out on gentle slopes with covered walkways. Expect some walking and light rain. Look for benches and cafes, and take a break if needed.

With parents at Chin Swee Caves Temple: The site is built on a steep, rocky hillside, so expect many steps and slopes between the halls, the pagoda and the upper terraces. Pick one or two levels, rest often and carry water; it can be misty and damp underfoot.

Arrive in the morning via the Awana SkyWay and visit Chin Swee Caves Temple while the air is clear. Have lunch there, check in at your hotel in the afternoon and rest. Spend the evening at SkyAvenue.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Genting Highlands trip for parents and children

  • Genting is about 20 to 22 C by day and 12 C at night, so bring a warm layer and a rain jacket in every month.
  • Both cable cars have enclosed gondolas with seating; check which line is running before you plan the day.
  • Chin Swee Caves Temple has many steps and steep paths. Pick one level, carry water and rest often.
  • SkyAvenue and the hotel complexes are covered and level, and are the best places to rest in wet weather.
  • Take out travel insurance with hospital cover; serious medical care is down the hill, so tell your hotel about medicines and conditions on arrival.
  • Avoid weekends and school holidays when queues for cable cars, rides and restaurants are long.
