Before you go

Genting Highlands with elderly parents: what to know

  • Genting is about 20 to 22 C by day and 12 C at night, so bring a warm layer and a rain jacket in every month.
  • Both cable cars have enclosed gondolas with seating; check which line is running before you plan the day.
  • Chin Swee Caves Temple has many steps and steep paths. Pick one level, carry water and rest often.
  • SkyAvenue and the hotel complexes are covered and level, and are the best places to rest in wet weather.
  • Take out travel insurance with hospital cover; serious medical care is down the hill, so tell your hotel about medicines and conditions on arrival.
  • Avoid weekends and school holidays when queues for cable cars, rides and restaurants are long.

Easiest first

Places in Genting Highlands sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Awana SkyWay (Places to visit · About 15 to 30 minutes each way, plus queueing) — Cabins are enclosed gondolas with seats, and stations are largely level, which suits most older travellers. Queues at peak times can be long and standing is the hard part. Check current accessibility arrangements with the operator.
  • Genting SkyWay (Places to visit · About 15 minutes each way, plus queueing) — Eight-seat enclosed gondolas, with seating, make it comfortable. Boarding is level at the stations, though queues at peak times can be long. Check the operator for assistance at boarding.
  • Gohtong Jaya (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours) — A normal township with roads and shops, mostly level in the centre. Check any memorial hall hours before visiting.
  • SkyAvenue (Shopping · 1 to 3 hours) — It is indoors, level and air-conditioned, with lifts and escalators between floors, so it suits most older travellers. Floors are large and crowded on weekends. Look for seating and toilets by the main concourse.
  • Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park (Places to visit · 2 to 4 hours) — Indoors and level, with seating nearby, so it is easy to wait while others ride. The venue can be noisy and crowded in holidays.
  • Spice Garden (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Inside the hotel complex, indoors and level with lifts nearby. The complex is large, so ask for the nearest lift route.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Chin Swee Vegetarian Cuisine (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The restaurant is at the temple lobby, so you reach it before the steep climbs. Some steps and slopes remain from the car park or cable car station.
  • Genting Highlands Premium Outlets (Shopping · 1.5 to 3 hours) — The centre is open-air and laid out on gentle slopes with covered walkways. Expect some walking and light rain. Look for benches and cafes, and take a break if needed.
  • Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park (Places to visit · A full day for families; 3 to 4 hours for a short visit) — The park is outdoors on sloping ground, with queues, showers and cool mist. Many rides are gentle, but there are fewer seats than in a shopping mall. Plan a rest, and bring a rain jacket.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Chin Swee Caves Temple (Places of worship · 1.5 to 2.5 hours, longer with a meal) — The site is built on a steep, rocky hillside, so expect many steps and slopes between the halls, the pagoda and the upper terraces. Pick one or two levels, rest often and carry water; it can be misty and damp underfoot.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Genting Highlands

  • Weather. Expect highs around 20 to 22 C and lows around 12 C in every month, with rain in all twelve. Carry a light jacket and a raincoat even in the drier months.
  • Getting around. Two cable cars, free internal shuttles and taxis link the areas. Check which cable car is running before planning; maintenance closures are announced in advance.
  • Crowds. Weekends, school holidays and Lunar New Year are crowded. Queues for cable cars, rides and restaurants are longest then, so travel midweek if you can.
  • Toll roads. The hill road is private, and entry charges apply at the Genting Sempah and Gohtong Jaya gantries. Check the current charges with your driver or taxi.
  • Dress and temple rules. Cover shoulders and knees at Chin Swee Caves Temple and take shoes off where asked. Expect cool, damp weather on the slope.
  • Food. Vegetarian options are limited. Ask about egg, fish, shrimp paste, ghee, onion and garlic every time, and book Indian or vegetarian meals ahead where you can.
  • Money. Malaysia uses the ringgit (MYR). Cards work at the resort, but small restaurants may be cash only, as reported for Chin Swee Vegetarian Cuisine.
  • Casino. The resort has Malaysia's only legal land-based casinos. If you do not want to enter, you can stay within SkyAvenue, the theme parks and your hotel; check entry rules separately.
